what's next?

  1. After processing your application, the U.S. Department of Education will send you a Student Aid Report (SAR) which lists all the information you report on your FAFSA.  If you provide an e-mail address, you will receive the SAR in a period of around four weeks, otherwise it will be sent to the address that you indicate.  Also the Department will send your data electronically to the schools you include in your FAFSA.  In the case of AUB, data is received at AUB's New York Office.

The SAR will include your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), the number used to determine your eligibility for federal aid.  This number appears on the upper right side of your SAR.

  1. Whether your SAR includes or not the EFC, you must review it carefully making sure that the information is correct and complete.  If your SAR contains the EFC then the latter will be used as a basis for the calculation of your federal student aid funds.

  1. Make corrections if and as needed.  You can do that online through the FAFSA web site.  If your SAR does not include the EFC then there must be either missing information or corrections to make.

Before receiving the loan

Once your application is processed, corrections are made and required documents if any are submitted.  You should follow-up withe the Financial Aid Office (FAO) at AUB.  If you have entered an email address in your FAFSA application, AUB uses this address to contact you and inform you about further steps. If, however, you did not enter an email address, or if your email becomes invalid then you should check with FAO for further steps.

The following are necessary steps to follow before you can receive the loan:

  1. If it is the first time you take a loan as an AUB student then you must complete an online Entrance Counseling.  Click on the link in order to complete it.
  2. You should notify the FAO if you are expecting any other form of financial aid such as scholarships, grants, loans other than Stafford, or graduate assistantships.
  3. The FAO will determine your eligibility for the subsidized and unsubsidized parts of the Stafford loan based on your EFC and the cost of AUB attendance.
  4. You should inform the FAO whether you want only part of or the entire loan amount that you are eligible for. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT THE LOAN NOR THE FULL AMOUNT THAT IS OFFERED.  Borrow only what you need.  In fact, we strongly recommend that you research other financial aid options before deciding to take a loan.
  5. You have to choose a lender who can provide the loan funds to AUB students. Currently AUB is aware of two lenders JP Morgan Chase Bank , Nelnet, and SallieMae who are willing to provide such funds. You can however still seek other lenders provided they approve disbursing funds to AUB. The lender's selection is your decision.
  6. You must fill and sign a lender's Master Promissory Note (MPN) in order to assign the loan proceeds to AUB. If you have selected one of the available lenders stated above then you can fill and sign the MPN electronically through the guarantee agency American Student Assistance (ASA) using their website ASA Direct. You can also use the links provided in the last section of this menu. However, if you select other lenders, then you should ask for a paper MPN from the lender, fill and sign it, and then submitted to FAO.
  7. The FAO will then certify your loan either electronically or on paper depending on your selection of lender. No certification is valid and funds cannot be disbursed unless you sign that MPN.

receiving the loan

The AUB New York Office usually coordinates with the lending agency and receives your funds in form of checks which are then deposited into the AUB account.  The FAO notifies you once the funds are received. The Comptroller verifies that the transaction has been made.

Any overpayment (amount that exceeds the tuition fees and other fees charged on the student) will be refunded to you through the Comptroller's Office.  You should be aware that any refund takes usually 2-3 weeks to occur due to the nature of transaction processing between american and lebanese accounts. The exact date of receiving your money cannot be guaranteed due to the variety of circumstances of each particular student.

If you are certified the loan and have not received the funds at time of payment, the Comptroller's Office should be notified that you are expecting Stafford Loan funds and the Comptroller will therefore defer payment of a portion of your tuition fees equivalent to the loan amount expected until loan funds are received.

If for some reason, your loan has been cancelled while you are still registered at AUB, then you must settle any deferred or outstanding balance of your semester fees.
