Dr. Digambara Patra's research highlighted in natureINDIA

The prestigious natureINDIA magazine highlighted the article: "Nanoparticle assembled microcapsules for application as pH and ammonia sensor", by Chemistry professor Dr. Digambara Patra and his co-workers, as a featured research work. The work involves senior Chemistry student Nour Awwad (June 2011 B.Sc. graduate), and is in collaboration with Dr. Rohit Kumar Rana and Dr. Arlin Jose Amali from the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, India. The highlight says: "Researchers have designed a new type of microcapsule-embedded fluorescent molecule that can monitor the concentration of hydrogen ions and ammonia present in environmental and biological samples. Ammonia is a toxic chemical that is released into the environment by farming and chemical industries". Read article.

Dr. Tarek Ghaddar receives research grant

Dr. Tarek Ghaddar recently received a research award from the Munib and Angela Masri Institute of Energy and Natural Resources. The award amounts to USD 15,000 as research funds for a project entitled “Novel Cyclometalated Ruthenium Complexes and Electrolyte Systems for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells”.
The first aim is to synthesize a new class of cyclometalated ruthenium complexes that will serve as dyes for the fabrication of dye sensitized solar cells. These complexes will act as strong light harvesting systems which might increase the efficiency of photo-to-current conversion to values above 10-11%. The second aim is to synthesize a new class of redox shuttle electrolytes based on the thiol/di-sulfide chemistry, in addition to exploring different electrocatalysts for such electrolyte on the cathode electrode.
Congratulations!
