    Visiting Professor of American Studies

    The Center for American Studies and Research (CASAR) at the American University of Beirut is seeking a scholar for a one-year position on a visiting academic appointment starting September 15, 2010. Professorial rank is open.

    Visiting Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern Studies

    The Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies at the American University of Beirut invites applications from recent PhDs for a two-year appointment, with possibility of renewal for one year, as visiting assistant professor. CAMES is an interdisciplinary graduate program leading to the MA. Candidates may apply from any humanities or social science discipline within Middle Eastern studies. Although the normal course load at AUB is three courses per semester, the appointee will teach only two courses each semester. The lighter course load will allow the appointee adequate time to serve as thesis advisor to MA students in CAMES and to engage in his/her own research. The successful candidate will offer courses, adopting an interdisciplinary approach, at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

    The position will begin September 15, 2010. Candidates should have completed their PhD before that time and within the last three years, be interested in teaching in an interdisciplinary and liberal arts environment, and hold promise of original scholarship.

    The Alfred H. Howell Endowed Chair in History and Archaeology

    The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Beirut seeks an established scholar of prominent standing in his/her field of specialization for visiting appointment to the Alfred H. Howell Endowed Chair in History and Archaeology.

    In History, the applicant will be a recognized senior academic specializing either in classical Islamic history or in the modern history of the Middle East in such areas, for example, as legal history and jurisprudence or in socio-economic, intellectual and cultural studies.

    In Archaeology, the applicant will be an acknowledged senior academic specializing in areas not currently covered by the department, including Egyptology, the archaeology of Mesopotamia and/ or Iran, the archaeology of pre-Islamic Arabia and the Gulf, Islamic, environmental or marine archaeology. Applicants who have experience in teaching archaeological methodology and theory are particularly welcome.

    In addition to the normal functions associated with the occupancy of a Chair at AUB, candidates are expected to teach two undergraduate or graduate courses per semester, supervise student research and MA or, in the case of History, PhD theses. The language of instruction is English. The period of visiting appointment is one to two years. The appointment is to begin on September 15, 2010.

    Director of the Center for American Studies and Research

    The American University of Beirut (AUB) seeks a scholar in the humanities or social sciences to serve as Director of the Center for American Studies and Research (CASAR) commencing September 15, 2010.

    The director is expected to forward the center’s mission to increase knowledge of the United States in the Middle East and to promote mutual understanding between Americans and Middle Easterners through teaching, research and outreach. Since its inception in 2003, CASAR has hosted a biennial international conference, organized an extensive annual lecture series, initiated an undergraduate curriculum, hired visiting professors, and established grants to support American Studies research. Further details about the center’s history and activities can be found at www.aub.edu.lb/fas/casar.

    The director of CASAR will require social and administrative skills, as well as a transnational vision of American Studies. The Ph.D. is required. A strong commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and research is necessary. Experience in American studies or related interdisciplinary programs is needed. The director will also receive an academic appointment in an appropriate AUB department, but her/his primary teaching duties will be in American studies. Rank is open, but appointment is most likely at the rank of full or associate professor. Salary and rank will be determined according to qualifications and professional experience. Although AUB does not offer tenure at this time, a long-term renewable contract is possible.

    The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages

    The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages seeks applicants in the fields of Modern Arabic Literature and Qur’anic Studies and Islamic Mysticism (tasawwuf).

    For the Modern Arabic literature position, applicants should be well versed in both Arab and Western classical heritages, as well as in modern literary theories. Applicants must be able to teach, in Arabic, service courses in Islamic theology and modern Arabic thought, and Arabic morphology and syntax to native speakers of Arabic.

    For the Qur’anic Studies and Islamic Mysticism (tasawwuf) position, preference will be given to candidates who can teach advanced courses in both fields. Knowledge of Persian language and literature would be an asset. Applicants must be able to teach, in Arabic, service courses in Islamic theology and philosophy and Arabic morphology and syntax to native speakers of Arabic. Solid knowledge of the Arabic heritage and training in Western methodologies are essential.

    Positions are normally at the Assistant Professor level to begin September 15, 2010, but appointments at higher ranks may also be considered. Appointments are for an initial period of four years. The usual teaching load is 3 courses. The language of instruction in this department (and only in this department) is classical Arabic, but mastery of English is an essential requirement. A good knowledge of French and/or German is highly desirable.

    The Civilization Sequence Program

    The Civilization Sequence Program (CVSP) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for two positions to begin September 15, 2010. The positions are in Islamic philosophy with a comparative interest in European medieval philosophy and 19th century studies with a comparative interest in the Middle East. Appointments are normally at the Assistant Professor level for an initial period of four years. Visiting appointments and/or appointments at higher ranks may also be considered. Both positions require a Ph.D. by the time of appointment.

    The CVSP is a service program which offers a number of interdisciplinary undergraduate humanities courses. Course load is normally nine hours a week. The language of instruction is English. The successful candidate for these positions will be required to teach core courses from the ancient to contemporary periods on a regular basis and will also be offered the opportunity to develop and teach undergraduate courses in service of the CVSP mission close to his/her research fields. For the core courses, faculty also participate by giving occasional common lectures to a large multi-sectioned audience.

    3- First or Second Language Acquisition

    The English Department at the American University of Beirut invites applications for a position in First or Second Language Acquisition, to begin September 15, 2010.

    Applicants must have a PhD in Linguistics or a closely related discipline at the time of appointment. They must also have a proven record of successful undergraduate and graduate teaching and a promising research program. The usual teaching load is not more than nine hours a week. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to teaching phonology, syntax, sociolinguistics, or quantitative research methods, at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.     The Department of Fine Arts and Art History

    The Department of Fine Arts and Art History at the American University of Beirut is seeking candidates for a full-time faculty position teaching ceramics. Courses to be taught range from elementary to advanced. The successful candidate should also be able to teach in the areas of Conceptual and Installation Art. Applicants should be fully aware of the most recent developments in the major fields of contemporary art, and should conceive of ceramics as a practice situated firmly within the currents of such art. An MFA is required.

    The Department of Geology

    The Department of Geology at the American University of Beirut (AUB) in Beirut, Lebanon, invites applications for faculty positions in the following areas:

    1- Carbonate Sedimentology: Responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in sedimentology and stratigraphy, along with other general geology courses. The successful candidate is expected to develop a vigorous research program in carbonate sedimentology, and to supervise graduate students. About 90% of the Lebanese crustal segment is made up of carbonate rocks. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in this field, and should have strong research records as demonstrated by publications in scholarly journals. Preference will be given to candidates with some teaching experience.

    2- Geotechnical Geology: Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate general geology courses at introductory and higher levels, as well as graduate courses in geotechnical engineering. The successful candidate is expected to develop a vigorous research program, and to supervise graduate students in this area. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in geology, and with some teaching experience. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Geology or Geotechnical Engineering but with a strong geology background should have some post-doctoral experience and strong research records as demonstrated by publications in scholarly journals.

    The Department of Mathematics

    The Department of Mathematics at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for positions in Mathematics at the Assistant Professor level. Employment will begin September 15, 2010.

    Only applicants holding a Ph.D. in the Mathematics field and showing a strong commitment to teaching and research will be considered.

    Anticipated vacancies are in the following areas:

    There are fourteen full time professorial rank faculty in mathematics and about 120 students in the major. The Department offers programs leading to the Bachelor and Master degrees. The Center for Advanced Mathematical Sciences at AUB, within walking distance from the department, also houses research activity in mathematics.

    The Department of Philosophy

    The Department of Physics

    The Department of Physics at the American University of Beirut invites applications for an academic position in Physics.

    The selected candidate should be able to initiate a new research direction in the Department as well as complement and enhance the existing research efforts that include Thin Films, Magnetic Materials, Plasma Physics, Theoretical High Energy Physics, Non-linear Dynamics, Astrophysics, and Theoretical Soft Matter Physics. Teaching experience is desirable.

    The candidate is expected to participate effectively in teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses as the Department offers BS, MS and PhD. degrees.

     All positions are normally at the Assistant Professor level to begin September 15, 2010. Appointments are for an initial period of four years. Visiting appointments and/or appointments at higher ranks may also be considered. The language of instruction is English.     The Department of Political Studies and Public Administration at the American University of Beirut invites applications for two open-rank positions to begin September 15, 2010, in the following areas:

    - Comparative Public Administration and Management with emphasis on Administrative Development

    - Public Administration with emphasis on Regional and Local Administration or Non-Profit Organizations Management
