The American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications and nominations for the position of the Jabre-Khwarizmi Endowed Chair in Arabic and Islamic Science and the Director of the Farouk K. Jabre Center (FJC) for Arabic and Islamic Science and Philosophy to begin September 1, 2013.

The FJC is envisioned as fostering a vibrant interdisciplinary environment and community which expands the store of reliable evidence on the Arabic and Islamic scientific and philosophical legacy; guides hypotheses about its broader significance in the recorded history of these fields; and introduces students, scholars, and the general public to Arabic and Islamic contributions to them. The chair and founding director will provide direction and continuity as the Center evolves; attract promising scholars to participate in its mission of research, education, and outreach; and manage all operations, including planning, budgeting, fundraising, public relations, programming, assessment, and reporting. The chair/director will report to the provost of the University and will have an appointment in the department of History and Archeology.

The chair/director will be an internationally recognized authority in the field of Arabic and Islamic Science who is capable of building a major research center from the ground up. The successful candidate will be a PhD-holder with an active research agenda and an exceptional research and publications record in one or more subfields of the specialty. An enthusiastic teacher and dynamic speaker, she/he will be equally comfortable giving introductory courses to undergraduates, advanced seminars to graduate students, and informative lectures and interviews that target the general public. The chair/director will have proven competence in administration, budgeting, and fundraising; a strong track record in networking and partnership-building; outstanding leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; and the ability to work effectively with people from a broad range of social, political, and cultural backgrounds. Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic is required.

The Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Media Studies - Digital Lab Instructor/Internships and Workshops Coordinator

The Media Studies Program at the American University of Beirut is seeking to fill the position of digital lab instructor/internships and workshops coordinator, to facilitate internships and media labs and to teach professional production and digital skills and assist professors in courses that mix theory and practical instruction. This is a full-time position at the instructor level to begin August 15, 2013.

We seek applicants who have an MA in media studies, journalism, communication or related fields. Applicants should possess English and Arabic communication skills along with administrative skills. Familiarity and contacts with local and regional media companies is highly desirable.

The successful candidate should be able to:

  • assist in teaching professional media production skills, including video and photo shooting/editing, basic web designing, social media, and other professional digital skills.
  • learn new media production skills and teach them to students.
  • manage a digital media lab.

    The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • teach and organize professional digital media skills workshops through the Media Lab course (MCOM 295A/B/C) and assist professors and students in other courses and lab sessions with their hands-on digital training and assignments.
  • maintain media production equipment, monitor and recommend updating and maintenance of other lab equipment and facilities, including computers and computer applications.
  • coordinate, administer, monitor, and promote student internships and seek agreements with companies to ensure internship opportunities for media students.
