For the commemoration of the International Day of Democracy, UNDP-Lebanon held a conference at the Parliament in which Ms. Geha participated. She presented a publication based on a study entitled "The Role of Parliament in Enhancing the PoliticalParticipation of Lebanese Youth". For more information click here.

April 22, 2013:
In conjunction with the Political Studies and Public Administration Department, the Leadership Club organized a Seminar entitled Leadership and Policy Making at Times of Crisis. The discussion will be presented by Prime Minister Najib Mikati . His excellency, will share his experience being a political leader in Lebanon. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, in West Hall Bathish, from 12:00 to 13:30.

April 15, 2013:
The Department of Political Studies and Public Administration held a panel discussion on Political Participation, Peace and Reconciliation. This event brought together a number of international, regional and local experts and policy-makers who were interested in discussing these topics with PSPA students. The Department of Political Studies and Public Administration invites you to a panel discussion entitled "Preparing for Life After Graduation: The Job Hunt". The panel members are: Dr. Thomas W. Dr. Danyel Reiche has published an article in the leading German daily newspaper “Sueddeutsche Zeitung”, which discusses the role of organized crime in sport betting and match fixing.

December 11, 2012:
The Department of Political Studies and Public Administration, in cooperation with the Office of Provost, will welcome His Excellency Mr. Leonel Fernandez, former President of the Dominican Republic, for a seminar titled "Latin America's Democratic Development". The event will be held on Friday, December 14, 2012, in College Hall, Room B1, from 11:00 to 12:30.

December 3, 2012:
Ms. Zeinab Mohamad Bailoun, was selected as the first place co-winner of AUB's Founder's Day Student Essay Contest. Zeinab had the opportunity to present her essay during Founder's Day Ceremony. The faculty and students of the PSPA Department would like to congratulate Ms.Bailoun for her accomplishment.

Dr. Danyel Reiche published an article titled The prohibition of online sports betting: a comparative analysis of Germany and the United States in European Sport Management Quarterly on November 26, 2012.

November 7, 2012:
The Department of Political Studies and Public Administration is co-sponsoring a Research Seminar on Policies and Politics of Teaching Religion titled “What to believe, how to behave?”  to be held in Byblos, Hotel Edde Sands, on November 9-11. The seminar is held jointly with the German research centre Res Gerendae.  The aim of the seminar is to explore common patterns of political intentions, structures, debates and processes, and to identify the conflict load generated by institutionalized religious socialization. Faculty and students are invited to the seminar sessions on Saturday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and on Sunday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm  For further information contact Dr. Theodor Hanf at: Theodor.hanf@gmail.com

November 5, 2012:
Dr. Tania Haddad will be attending a workshop at Harvard University on "Strategic Management for Leaders of Non-Governmental Organizations"  May 12- 17, 2013. She will also present the following papers at the conference: "Civil society in the Middle East and the  the Arab Spring"  at the Religion and Democracy: Local Questions, Global Perspectives, to be held  in New Delhi, India December 10-14, 2012, and "Cooperatives and the state of Lebanon" at the Social Enterprise If Not For Profit, For What? And How?  4th EMES International Research Conference University to be held in Liege (Belgium), July 1-4, 2013

November 4, 2012:
Dr. Ohannes Geukjian will present a paper titled "An Ignored Relationship: The Lebanese Armenian Diaspora and Conflict Resolution since 1975"  at the conference in Denver, Colorado to be held in November, 2012.

October 31, 2012:
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) and the Political Studies and Public Administration Department at the American University of Beirut (AUB) held an event titled New Horizons: Advocacy and Citizens Engagement in Lebanese Regions at Crowne Plaza Hotel, on November 1st, 2012, from 9.00 to 17:00. The event was attended by representatives of the government, academia, donor agencies, and civil society from Beirut and the regions. PSPA was represented by the following faculty members: Thomas W. Haase; Carmen Geha; Randa Antoun; Hiba Khodr; and Tania Haddad.

Dr. Hiba Khodr presented a paper titled "The Implications of Arab Revolutions on US Foreign Policy Towards Islamic Organizations: The case of MB in Post-Mubarak Egypt"  at the "Middle East Congress on Politics and Society" conference organized by Sakarya University in Turkey, Social Science Institute on October 9-11, 2012.  

October 23, 2012:
The Department of Political Studies and Public Administration cordially invites you to a brown-bag lecture by Emma Hayward. The lecture is titled: "States and Devolution of Judicial Power: A Comparison of Egypt and Lebanon". The lecture will be held on Monday, November 5, 2012, West Hall, Room 310, at 14:00.

October 4, 2012:
Dr. Danyel Reiche will present two papers on corporate social responsibility in the professional sport sector and on the regulation of sports betting at the SMAANZ (Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand) 2012 Conference in Sydney, Australia. The conference will be held on November 28-30, 2012.

May 7, 2012:
PSPA student Rakan Twal was invited to attend a session of the Doha Debates, which was filmed on April 30, 2012. May 2, 2012:
Dr. Danyel Reiche will deliver a lecture entitled "The Prohibition of Online Sports Betting: A comparative analysis of Germany and the United States" at the Annual Conference of International Association for the Study of German Politics, in London, UK, on May 22, 2012.

April 21, 2012:
The Department of Political Studies and Public Administration organized a 'question and answer' session with United Kingdom Minister for Middle East Affairs, Mr. Alistair Burt MP entitled, The Arab Spring and the Middle East: A British Perspective, on April 20, 2012. Minister Burt spoke about the opportunities presented by the Arab Spring, and answered questions about United Kingdom’s foreign policy towards countries such as Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Bahrain and Tunisia.

December 13, 2011:

The Department of Political Studies and Public Administration is pleased to present a lecture by Dr. Sami Moubayed titled, Syria and the Arab Spring: Future Scenarios for 2012. The lecture will be held in West Hall, Auditorium C at 6:00 pm on December 16, 2011. Dr. Moubayed is a professor at the University of Kalamoon in Syria and editor-in-chief of Forward Magazine. He is an author of five books on modern Syria, the latest “Syria and the USA” (IB Tauris) is due for release in December 2012. Moubayed writes regularly for Asia Times, Gulf News, and the Huffington Post. He studied at the PSPA Department and AUB and graduated in 2000, then obtained a PhD in Middle East Studies from the University of Exeter. 

 

December 12, 2011:

Mr. Mario Abou Zeid, a PSPA graduate student, was elected Vice President of the University Student Faculty Committee (USFC). The USFC represents all students at the university and provides a forum for expression, discussion and action concerning student rights, privileges and opinions. With the duty to promote and ensure the general welfare of all AUB students, the committee adheres to the university’s laws and policies by encouraging personal responsibility and transparency.

 

December 7, 2011: 
Dr. Danyel Reiche, an Assistant Professor for Comparative Politics at AUB, will deliver a lecture on War Minus the Shooting? Sport, Politics, and Sectarianism in Lebanon, January 17, 2012,  in the Orient Institut Beirut (OIB), at 19:00. 

December 6, 2011:

Dr. Jamil Mouawad, a PhD candidate in politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), will hold a Brown Bag lecture entitled "Why Does the State still Exist in Lebanon?" The lecture will take place December, 14, 2011 in the West Hall, Room 310, AUB, at 15:30.

December 5, 2011:
Ms. Aliaa Mostafa El Zeiny, a senior in the PSPA Department, was selected as the first place winner of AUB's Founder's Day Student Essay Contest. Aliaa had the opportunity to present her essay, An Egyptian, An Arab, An AUB Student, during AUB's Founder's Day Ceremony. The faculty and students of the PSPA Department would like congratulate Ms. El Zeiny for her accomplishment.

December 1, 2011:

Dr. Lina Haddad Kreidie will deliver a Brown Bag lecture on "The Rise of Iran: Identity Narrative to Challenge the Existing Power Establishment Contesting US Hegemony, Israeli, and Sunni Powers in the Middle East" . The lecture will take place in the West Hall, Room 310, AUB, at 17:00.

 

November 23, 2011:

The PSPA Society, in collaboration with the Psychology Student Society, is organizing a mixer at Boston Pub/Restaurant in Hamra (near Ghali photocopy center). This social event will include open wings, open soft drinks, open beer, and open nachos. Tickets may be purchased on Monday and Wednesday from the PSPA Society in front of West Hall.

 

November 18, 2011:

Dr. Anthony Billingsley, a lecturer on Middle East and International Relations at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, will participate in an informal discussion on "Does International Law matter to the Middle East?" The discussion is organized by the UN in the Middle East Program at the Issam Fares Institute, and will take place in Van Dyck conference room (1st floor), AUB, at 14:00.

 

November 2, 2011: 

Dr. Christian Lequesne, Director of the Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches Internationales (CERI), Paris, gave a brownbag seminar entitled The EU and the Arab Spring, which took place on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, from 14:00-16:00 at the Auditorium C, West Hall. 

 

July 4, 2011:

Assistant Professor Dr. Samer Frangie participated in the international conference: Social Sciences in Arab Countries Facing a Scientific Multi-versalism: Pathways, Challenges and Constraints.  He delivered a joint presentation, in collaboration with Dr. Fadi Bardawil, titled: A Periphery's Bind: Geographic Location, Conceptual Resources and Public Engagement in Lebanese Social Scientific Practice. The conference was held at the American University of Beirut on July 8-9, 2011.

 

June 29, 2011:

The Department of Political Studies and Public Administration would like to congratulate Dr. Karim Makdisi and Dr. Waleed Hazbun, who were recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor.
