MA Degrees

The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences offers a program leading to two Master's degrees, one in Sociology, and the other in Anthropology. For details on the Media Studies Graduate Program, click here.

Upon admission to graduate study as a regular graduate student, an academic advisor is assigned by the department whose role is to coordinate your overall instructional program.  In consultation with the academic advisor, by the beginning of the second semester you should choose a thesis supervisor who will guide you in pursuing your research interests and who will supervise your thesis.  The thesis supervisor may or may not be the same as the academic advisor.  In the event of a change in your research interest or for any other good reason, you are at liberty to choose another faculty member as your thesis supervisor after consulting your academic advisor.  If thesis supervisor and academic advisor are the same, you should consult the department chair.  Normally the academic advisor will remain the same throughout your graduate career in the SBS department.

Admissions

Regular BA Students:
Students with a BA degree in Sociology - Anthropology or a related field from any accredited institution may be admitted directly to the program.  Those in high standing are admitted as regular graduate students.  Personal interviews with candidates unknown to the department are recommended before admission.

Undergraduate Deficiencies:
Candidates with deficient undergraduate preparation are admitted on probation or as prospective graduate students.  They are normally required to make up for deficiencies.  The number of such courses will be determined by the department.

Requirements

A regular candidate for the MA degree in sociology or anthropology is required to complete 21 graduate credit hours plus a thesis.
- Sociology students are to complete SOAN 300 and SOAN 312, and for those wanting a concentration in communication, SOAN 313 would be required to complete.
- Anthropology students are to complete SOAN 300 and SOAN 310.
The rest of the requirements, following the consent of the adviser and the interest of the graduate student, can be selected from other offerings in the department, or in FAS and other schools and faculties on campus.
