George R. Rais Endowed Architecture Award

George R. Rais Endowed Architecture Awards:

Michel Rais made a generous gift to AUB to establish “The George R. Rais Endowment Architecture Award,” which will be open to third-year architecture students, starting academic year 2014-2015.

The award honors the memory and accomplishments of his brother, famed architect George R. Rais, who was also a faculty member at AUB between 1977 and 1984.

The annual award will recognize the achievements of three top architecture students at AUB, who will be selected by the Department of Architecture and Design’s Administrative Committee, based on the students’ performance during the fall and spring semesters of their second year, and the fall semester of their third year.

“It seems so appropriate to honor George in this way,” said Michel Rais.  “He taught so many people – not just AUB students, but colleagues as well.”

George Raja Rais, who passed away in 2002, was remembered not only as a master of architectural design, detailing, and construction techniques, but also as a teacher and an educator.  During his long and distinguished career, Rais collaborated with and trained leading architects in Lebanon and the region including Assem Salam, Gregoire Serof, Khalil Khoury, Raoul Verney, Rahif Fayad, Lucien Cassia, Jaafar Tukan, Sany Jamal, and Rula Rais. Working alone and in partnership with others, Rais was involved in many important projects in Lebanon such as the Pan Am Building in Riad el Solh, the El Hamra Cinema building, the Arida Building in Sanayeh, and the Fouad Boutros building on Sursock Street. Rais also worked on many high-profile projects in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, and Switzerland.

Awarded to three students in their third year of studies pursuing a degree in Architecture.
Selection is based on best project as determined by the Administrative Committee of the Department of Architecture.
First prize: $8,000
