Summary
The ‘War and Global Health Working Group’ is a network of social scientist, public health and medical practitioners working at the intersection of war and global health. Building on the experiences and expertise of participants in the region and beyond, the group examines the multifaceted forms of violence associated with contemporary wars. As the line between military and humanitarian interventions have become blurred in such wars, the group will attempt to dissect this association and come up with relevant frameworks to address the forms of insecurity emerging in conflict and post-conflict and their health effects both at the individual and population levels. The group had its first meeting on September 1 to 2 to critically explore the significance and effects of global health interventions in the context of global wars. One main outcomes of the workshop was the writing and submission of a commentary for the Lancet on global health and global wars since 9/11.
