Guidelines for IFI Public Policy and International Affairs Grants

The Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs, in accordance with its mission to contribute to public policy and international affairs debates in the Arab world through the production and dissemination of evidence-based and action-oriented research, is accepting grant applications from AUB faculty members for three kinds of scholarly activity:
  1. Research Travel Grants (Deadline is September 1)
  2. Summer Research Grants (Deadline is July 1)
  3. Annual Research Grants (Deadline is September 1)
In addition, IFI offers research grants for Masters students in the amount of $1000. Students will have to submit their proposal along with a recommendation from their advisor and department chair.
All grants are intended to support research related to the following core programs at the institute but proposals to research general public policy and international affairs issues will also be considered (details about the program can be retrieved online or by contacting the institute):
  1. Policy and Governance in Palestinian Refugee Camps
  2. Research, Advocacy and Public Policy-Making
  3. Climate Change and Environment
  4. Youth in the Arab World
AUB Faculty may apply for grants in more than one category, but may receive funding in any one category only once per year. Applications for all grants require the completion and submission of the “Application Form for IFI Grants for AUB Faculty”, in addition to the other required documents for each category. All documents should be submitted to the IFI office (408 Diana Tammari Sabbagh Bldg.). Specific guidelines and instructions for the three types of grants are outlined below.

I. Research Travel Grant

This grant involves travel for the purpose of researching a topic related to public policy issues in the Arab world, and it is valid for twelve months from the approval date. The applicant will receive a stipend of $2000 USD per month (up to two months) in addition to the cost of an airplane ticket. The deadline for applications is September 1st.

Required Documents:
  1. Application Form for IFI Grants for AUB Faculty.
  2. Proposal that includes:
    • Title of the project.
    • Abstract (not to exceed 200 words).
    • Dates of proposed research.
    • Description of the proposed research including its specific aims, review of related work, methods of inquiry and analysis, and significance of the project (not to exceed 5 pages).
    • Other funds expected or received for the same research project.
    • A Curriculum Vita.
  3. Request and authorization for Official University Travel request approved by your Chair and Dean. Please ignore per diem section on the travel request, estimate the transportation cost (airfare) and under “Miscellaneous” include cash in advance for research expenses (Calculate this as $2000 USD per month and prorate the amount for parts of a month).
  4. Copy of the official leave request approved by your Chair and Dean.
If your grant is approved, IFI will cover two kinds of expenses:
  1. Airplane ticket: You are requested to purchase the ticket through AUB Auxiliary Services. IFI will directly pay the auxiliary services for the amount of the ticket.
  2. For all other expenses, you will receive a payment voucher for cash in advance ($2000 USD / month). These expenses include:
    • Transportation expenses (including car rental).
    • Lodging.
    • Food (Please save your receipts for auditing purposes; however, you will not need to submit receipts for food unless the expenses exceed $60 USD/day).
    • Other research expenses (such as copying etc...)
All the above expenses should be justified by receipts and submitted along with an expense report to the IFI office when you return from your trip.

II. Summer Research Stipend Grant

The Summer Research Stipend Grant will be awarded to applicants who wish to conduct research related to public policy issues while staying in Lebanon during the summer semester. The deadline for applications is July 1st. This grant does not involve travel. The applicant will receive a stipend of $2000 to be spent on research purposes. This money will be processed via payroll (and thus will be subject to taxes according the Lebanese Labor law). In order to be eligible for this grant, applicants cannot participate in any teaching during the summer.

Required Documents:
  1. Application Form for IFI Grants for AUB Faculty.
  2. Proposal that includes:
    • Title of the project.
    • The date when the research begins and when it ends.
    • Abstract (not to exceed 200 words).
    • Description of the proposed research including specific aims, review of related work, methods of inquiry and analysis, significance of the project (not to exceed 5 pages), and explanation of how this grant will help you achieve your objectives.
    • Other funds expected or received for the same research project.
    • A Curriculum Vita.

III. Annual Research Grants

There are two types of Annual Research Grants awarded by IFI. Basic grants between $4,000 and $6,000 will be awarded to applicants who wish to conduct research related to public policy issues in Lebanon and/or the region. Larger grants between $10,000 and $15,000 will be awarded to AUB faculty who wish to conduct inter and multi-disciplinary research with a regional perspective. Such research projects can be comparative in nature and can be submitted by more than one faculty member, preferably from different faculties and/or departments within AUB. The deadline for applications is September 1st.

  2. Proposal that includes:
