As part its International Affairs component, IFI launched this new research initiative in 2009 to explore the roles, activities and impact of the UN in the Middle East.

IFI's series of public lectures by experienced mediators, funded by Bill and Sally Hambrecht. On completing the series, IFI will publish a volume based on the lectures for students and practitioners of conflict-resolution and mediation.
International Affairs news and activities
- IFI Director Rami G. Khouri co-taught a course open to the entire Boston community, on America, Islam and the Middle East. The classes included presentations and discussions from journalists, professors and policy-makers. IFI Associate Director Dr Karim Makdisi also gave a presentation.
- Visiting Scholar at IFI's UN in the Middle East Research Initiative Martin Wählisch publishes Palestine, the UN, and international law on the Al Jazeera English website. An unabridged version of the article, Palestine's UN Membership and International Law, can be accessed from The Palestine Chronicle. An Arabic translation of the article can now be found at Jadaliyya.
- The Nation publishes Rami G. Khouri's The Arab Awakening, and the New York Times publishes his International Herald Tribune op-ed, "Asad, Going Down".
- The Wilson Quarterly publishes The Long Revolt by IFI Director Rami G. Khouri. The Woodrow Wilson Center holds a panel discussion Arab Spring or Arab Winter (or Both)? Implications for U.S. Policy with IFI's Director (via Skype) and other distinguished speakers Marwan Muasher, Ellen Laipson and Aaron David Miller.
- IFI Director Rami G. Khouri recently lectured at Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC) head office in Ottawa, The Longest Spring: The struggle to control the Arab world. He drew on two years of research on Arab youth that shows how material stresses and intangible political degradations led to the uprisings.

- IFI Director Rami G. Khouri is interviewed by the Near East Quarterly on the viability of democracy in the Middle East, "Is a democratic Middle East inevitable?" He has also published an opinion piece in the NYT on the UN Palestinian statehood bid.
- The Chicago Post on Security and Terrorism (CPOST) publishes Rami G. Khouri's perspective, "The Middle East Ten Years after 9/11", in CPOST's September 11, 2011 TEN YEARS LATER edition.
- The Nation publishes Rami G. Khouri's The Arab Awakening, and the New York Times publishes his International Herald Tribune op-ed, "Asad, Going Down".
- Director of the Middle East Institute at the National University of Singapore and Professor of International Relations at the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University Michael Hudson had joined IFI as visiting scholar during his stay in Beirut. He has contributed to and edited numerous books. His latest essay, Awakening, Cataclysm, or Just a Series of Events? Reflections on the Current Wave of Protest in the Arab World, is published on Jadaliyya.
Hudson gave a presentation, The "Arab Awakening": Western and [far] Eastern Perspectives, as part of IFI's "Lunch Time Talks", which was attended by AUB Provost Ahmad Dallal and distinguished AUB deans and professors from a range of faculties.
- AUB and IFI engage change in the U.S.
Following the success of a public lecture organized by AUB's Office of the Provost, a diverse academic panel of experts from AUB, including IFI's Director and Associate Director, were invited for a three-day lecture tour at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in New York.
- AUB-IFI Engages Change
IFI Director Rami G Khouri insists that Arab democracy be given a chance in an interview with CNN World's Global Public Square, and predicts the current historic changes sweeping the Arab world will lead to a secular political order in an interview with The Cario Review of Global Affairs for the American University of Cairo. Mr Khouri also joined IFI's Associate Director Dr Karim Makdisi for a distinguished AUB panel event, Engaging Change in the Middle East: Reflections on Regional Transformations, which was organized by AUB's Office of the Provost; the event was covered by AUB's Office of Communications and the Beirut-based Daily Star.

IFI Director Rami G Khouri reflects on Judge Goldstone's recent controvertial op-ed in Goldstone: Person and Process, and IFI Associate Director Dr Karim Makdisi summarizes events in a follow-up report since IFI hosted members of the Goldstone Panel at AUB.
