Exhibitors included prominent Lebanese artists alongside emerging talents
Paintings, photographs, sculptures, ceramics and jewelry filled the common room in West Hall this weekend. The artworks-- more than 100 in total-- were the proud works of American University of Beirut alumni.
To celebrate the achievements of its alumni artists, AUB and the Worldwide Alumni Association of AUB organized on February 15 and 16, 2013 the first AUB Alumni Art Expo, showcasing the works of over 60 alumni from Lebanon, MENA, Europe and the US.
The exhibition was inaugurated on Friday evening, in the presence of the alumni artists and AUB President Peter Dorman and WAAAUB Preisdent Nabil Dajani. Members of the AUB Alumni Art Expo committee, artist Lena Kelekian (BS '81) and Fine Arts senior lecturer David Kurani (BA '66) also delivered welcoming speeches.
Ceramist Amal Muraywed (BA '75), collector Ramzi Saidi (BA '59), and artist Nadim Karam (BAR '82) capped off the exhibition with a series of talks on art.
Exhibitors included prominent Lebanese artists such as Stelio Skamanga, Huguette Caland, Lena Kelekian, David Kurani, and Camille Zakharia, alongside emerging talents such as installation artist Reem Akl, ceramist Nour Ali (BAA '09), both from London as well as other numerous captivating paintings, photographs, sculptures, jewelry and ceramic pieces created by AUB alumni.
The first of its kind for the AUB alumni community, the exhibit echoes AUB’s recent foray into promoting and preserving the cultural heritage of the arts in Lebanon and the region. This was highlighted during the June 2012 exhibit of the Khalil Saleeby collection, donated to AUB and temporarily exhibited last summer at the AUB Art Gallery. At that time AUB President Peter Dorman noted, “This is part of a long-term plan to create a home for modern and contemporary art on the campus of AUB.”
WAAAUB and AUB alumni around the world are helping with this long-term plan by showcasing the talents of their own community at the 2013 AUB Alumni Art Expo. A complete schedule and full list of exhibitors is available on the event website: http://www.aub.edu.lb/alumni/calendar/Pages/Artexpo.aspx.
