Trustee and alumna Huda Zoghbi honored by Harvard University

Trustee Huda Zoghbi (BS ’76) was one of ten people who received an honorary doctoral degree from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, during a morning ceremony on May 25, 2017. Among the other honorands were Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, composer John Williams, physicist Walter E. Massey, and actress Dame Judi Dench.
This latest recognition of Dr. Zoghbi’s groundbreaking work as a neurogeneticist joins a long list of honors including, most recently, this year’s Breakthrough Prize, Canada’s Gairdner International Award, the Shaw Prize, the first Nemmers Prize for Medicine, and the Jessie Stevenson Kovalenko Medal, awarded every three years by the US National Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Zoghbi is a graduate of the American University of Beirut and Meharry Medical College. She is the Ralph D. Feigin Professor of Pediatrics, Molecular and Human Genetics, Neurology, and Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator.
Her research on the genetics of neurodevelopment and neurodegeneration has led both to basic discoveries and to explanations of rare neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental diseases, including spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) and Rett syndrome, a crippling, delayed-onset autism spectrum disorder. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences.
