23,000 attendees at #AUBOutdoors2017 gathered for the Alien Invasion

Tens of thousands of people came to the campus of the American University of Beirut (AUB) during the weekend of May 20 and 21 to attend the student-led annual festival, AUB Outdoors. All age groups from across the country gathered for two days full of festivities, games, food, concerts, and lots of entertainment.
Under the theme of the Alien Invasion, the upper campus from Main Gate to the Green Oval was decorated with banners and lights related to this theme. Parades filled with alien costumes and extra-terrestrial creatures kicked off every now and then.
Two stages where placed: one on the Oval and one in front of West Hall. From 10 am to 10 pm on both days, performances were running on the stages, including choreographies, bands, magic shows, food competitions, and the famous Virgin Radio Lebanon Roadshow.
On Saturday, renowned stand-up comedians Hicham Haddad, Tony Abou Jaoudeh, Jad Bou Karam, and Bonita Saade, also known as “The Laugh Story,” performed to thousands of attendees their best sketches. On Sunday, world-famous DJ Lost Frequencies shuffled the decks, attracting thousands of pop culture enthusiasts that danced the night away.
Stands around West Hall and the Green Oval were hosted by student clubs and societies, as well as third party sponsors, featuring games and food items. A special kids’ area was set up with huge inflatables and there was a “space diner” serving “space” food behind the cafeteria.
Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Talal Nizameddin, highlighted the fact that this huge and successful event is solely student-led, adding that “Outdoors 2017 was simply electric this year.”
“Once again AUB students showed me that they belong to a stellar caliber in terms of taking the lead in a massive project and executing it successfully. Outdoors has become a community event with international standard performances. It is the biggest of its kind in Lebanon and the Middle East,” said Dean Nizameddin. “The most important thing to remember is that it is the result of student initiative and leadership. Yes, I try to mentor, advise, and guide but it’s the student team who so magnificently inspire with their collective spirit of teamwork, hard work and outstanding talent. After many years I am still moved by the brilliance of the event.”
