Students From 25 Lebanese Schools at This Year's Science, Mathematics and Technology Fair
 | The prize-winning students
| During the weekend of May 2-4, 2003 students from 25 schools in Lebanon came to the AUB campus to participate in the 10th Annual Science, Mathematics and Technology Fair.
Students ranging from kindergarten to secondary school entered their projects in a number of different categories and competed for prizes. There were science research projects and mathematical investigations, creative models of physical or biological processes and models of mathematical concepts and principles; there were novel designs of mechanical and electronic devices, websites and other computer-based projects. |
AUB's indoor basketball court, where the fair was held, was abuzz with activity and excitement for three days. On the Friday afternoon the students arrived, set up their projects and were available to display their work to interested family and friends, AUB faculty and other visitors. A ceremony on the Green Field late Friday afternoon officially opened the fair. On Saturday morning, each project was evaluated by two judges according to specified criteria covering content, communicative skill, creativity, and overall professionalism. Prizes were awarded in a ceremony held at mid-day on Sunday on AUB's Green Field.
Many members of the AUB community were involved in this event. The Education Students Society (ESS), with Lama Rawdah as president, was the main organizer of the event with support from the faculty members of the Science and Math Education Center (SMEC); Dr. Saouma BouJaoude, director of SMEC, Dr. Murad Jurdak, Dr. Marjorie Henningsen, and Dr. Tamer Amin (ESS advisor). More than 20 other faculty members from a number of different AUB faculties served as judges along with the members of SMEC and education major seniors specializing in science and mathematics. | The organizers: Dr. Marjorie Henningsen, Lama Rawdah, and Dr. Tamer Amin |
Now in its 10th year the growing visibility of this event is evident in the sponsorship by Harcourt Publishers in the form of generous prizes of educational materials and in the coverage of the event in the first issue of 'ilm wa 'alam (Science and World), a new Arabic language popular science magazine now published in Lebanon.
