AUB and Coca-Cola announce winners of the 'Make Every Word Count' Essay Competition

| The American University of Beirut (AUB) and Coca-Cola announced on May 23 the winners of the 'Make Every Word Count' Essay Competition. Chirine Chehab and Maya Itani tied for the first prize since they both submitted excellent ideas responding to the essay competition topic. They were both awarded a $750 check along with certificates, and all essay participants received participation certificates.
The announcement was made in the Van Dyck Auditorium in the presence of a number of students and faculty.
Chirine Chehab, Maya Itani and all other students that participated wrote essays in response to the question: "In what way can Coca-Cola, through the use of cause-related marketing and/or community partnerships, utilize the power of its brand to demonstrate its commitment to the Lebanese society?" The winning essays were remarkably insightful and well-researched. |

| Students were graded and selected based on pre-determined criteria set by the essay panel, which included professors from AUB and representatives from Coca-Cola. The criteria included: relevance, rigor and coverage; innovativeness and feasibility of ideas presented; clarity and support (theoretical/empirical/rational) for ideas presented, and last but not least, writing style, organization and flow.
Dr. Imad Baalbaki, Professor of Marketing at the Olayan School of Business, praised students for the high-quality essays they submitted. Along with the other committee members Dr Imad Baalbaki, Dr Nabil Dajani, Dr Dima Jamali, Dr Nadia Shuayto, Dr. Baalbaki congratulated the winners, and praised students for the quality of essays they submitted, saying that all the essays qualified to win and that students showed how much they care about their country through their essays. |
Ms. Lubna Forzley, Public Affairs and Communications Manager - Coca-Cola Middle East, thanked each student for taking the time to write outstanding essays that provide a very good understanding of the Corporate Social Responsibility field and its applicability to Coca-Cola and the Lebanese Community.
The 'Make Every World Count' essay competition was initially launched in March by the Coca-Cola Company during a seminar on Corporate Social Responsibility, when it was also announced that the Coca-Cola Foundation had made a grant of $2 million to the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business to establish the Coca-Cola Chair in Marketing. |
