AUB students display shots of creativity at photo exhibit

Kassab's 'Deconstruction' also served as the exhibition poster photo

Creative, poignant, or funny were only some of the adjectives used to describe pictures at the student photography exhibit which took place in West Hall's Common Room March 23-29.

About 15 students are currently exhibiting nearly 60 photographs, which were some of the assignment requirements of their Advanced Photography class, which they took during the Fall semester.

Photography instructor Marc Nader chose some of the best works to share them with the AUB community and the general public, at the seven-day exhibit, titled 'Line of Sight'. Organized by the Department of Photography and the Office of Information and Public Relations, the exhibit was put together by students Vasily Kassab and Anneta Abou Saleh, both, photography enthusiasts who took the advanced course and participated in the exhibit. The two also designed its promotional poster and invitation card.

"I am so proud of the work the students did," said Nader. "In all honesty, if I compare this exhibit to other student exhibits around town, it certainly stands out. The quality of the work is first-rate."

Professor Leila Musfy, the chair of the department of architecture, also praised the exhibit, logging her comments in the exhibition log book. "You make us proud!" she wrote, addressing students.

Nadine ElAli's interpretation of the theme 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly' prompted laughter

The idea for holding an exhibit outside the confines of the architecture department belongs to Professor Marwan El Sabban, the chair of the department of human morphology, under which the photography department is housed. He, too, was impressed with the work students had produced. "There is abundant talent," he said.

Nader hopes that this exhibit will promote photography as an art and academic discipline among young people. He said he will also aim to make it an annual event.

The photos featured a variety of portraits, shots of still objects on table-tops, story sequences, and interpretation of two themes, "Knocking on Heaven's Door," and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly."

Lynn Abdouni's 'Traffic Lights'

One photograph captures youth transcending age in the portrait of an elderly woman with playful, as she blows a bubble with a bubblegum. Another depicts the three colors of traffic lights in a composition of wine glasses. Several photos demonstrate the photographer's skills in lighting techniques and composition to depict objects on tabletops; while the theme of "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" let students' imagination loose, sometimes revealing a witty sense of humor, as in the photo showing the backs of three women sitting on a bench: one wearing a shirt that covers her behind; another with her G-string showing above her jeans; and a third with her low-riding jeans revealing part of her rear.

Visitors Lama Hoteit, an AUB alumna, and senior Zeinab Abou Yehia broke into laughter when they saw the rear-view series at the exhibition. "This exhibit is just excellent. The photos are very, very creative," said Hoteit. "It's amazing."

Abou Yehia agreed. "It is a truly beautiful exhibition, very creative. Some of the photos are also very poignant," she said. "I hope we will see more such student exhibits on campus."
