
Dr. Hassan El Solh will be appointed as Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Children’s Cancer Center of Lebanon effective March 1, 2012. Dr. El Solh graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine from AUB in 1980, after which he completed his residency training in Pediatrics at AUBMC (1980-1983), followed by two years of residency in Pediatrics at the University of Western Ontario, Canada (1983-1984 and 1986-1987), two years of fellowship in Pediatric Hematology Oncology at the University of Toronto, The Hospital of Sick Children (1984-1986), and one year of Clinical Fellowship in Bone Marrow Transplantation at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center at University of Washington (1987-1988). Dr. El Solh is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology Oncology, and by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Dr. El Solh was appointed as Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto (1988-1992), and as Associate Professor at AUB (August 1996 - February 1997), and as Professor at Al Faisal University, KSA in 1997.
Over the years, Dr. El Solh has an illustrious career in Pediatric Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplantation and has assumed numerous appointments and responsibilities. He has served as Associate Director, Bone Marrow Transplant Program and Director of Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada (1988-1992), Deputy Medical Director and Director of Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Processing Program at the Canadian Blood Center, Toronto, Canada (1989-1992), Director of Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation Program and Consultant Pediatric Hematology-Oncology (1992–1996), Head Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (1998–2000), Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (2000-2006), Assistant Deputy Chief Operating Officer and Medical and Clinical Operations (2001-2005) at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, Medical Director (2000-2008) at King Fahad National Center for Children’s Cancer& Research, Deputy Executive Director (2005–2008) at Medical and Clinical Operations at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center, Executive Director (2008-2011) at King Fahad National Center for Children’s Cancer, Executive Champion of Strategic Project: Establish and Develop World leading of Programs/ Services for KFSH&RC (2009–Present), Senior Consultant of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the Department of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (2011–Present), and Executive Management Consultant International Collaboration and Development at the General Corporate Consultancy Office of King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center- General Organization (2011-Present).
Dr. El Solh name appears on 76 journal publications; 37 as first/ senior author and 5 as second author. He has 55 original articles, 18 case reports, 3 letters and 1 review. Of the 37 publications as senior author, Dr. El Solh has 6 articles (2 original , & 4 case reports) in refereed journals that are in the upper 25th percentile and 13 articles (11 original , 1 letter & 1 case report) in journals rank between 50-75th percentile in their respective disciplines with respect to impact factor.
He will provide the strong leadership needed to lead the Children’s Cancer Center of Lebanon at AUBMC.

Dr. Lara Nassar received the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the Lebanese University graduating the first in her class. She did her residency training in Radiology at the American University of Beirut Medical Center from 2006 till 2010. In May 2010 Dr. Nassar passed the Fellowship in the Royal College of Radiologists in UK. She joins us after finishing a clinical fellowship in Breast Imaging at the Schering Cross Hospital in London, UK.
Dr. Nassar will be working with Dr. Youssef El-Zein and Dr. Ghina Birjawi in the Mamdouha El-Sayed Bobst Breast Unit covering all aspects of breast imaging and intervention.
In addition , Dr. Nassar will also provide coverage in Ultrasound , General Radiology as well as ER calls.

Dr. Apaydin holds a PhD degree in strategic management from the UWO (Canada), an MBA in Finance and International Business and an MA in Islamic Studies, both from UCLA, and an MsEE in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles from the LETI (Russia). Dr. Apaydin’s research interests include business strategy, leadership, innovation, decision-making, M&A, international business, and social networks. She has published in the top academic journals such as J. of Management Studies, J. of World Business, J. of Management Development, and Intl J. of Emerging Markets. Dr. Apaydin taught strategy, innovation, international business, ethics, and business communications at AUC (Egypt), Sabanci U (Turkey), and SYSU (China) where she also developed and delivered workshops on the case method to professors and students. Dr. Apaydin has 20 years of professional experience in finance and consulting, in several industries across Europe, the Middle East and the USA. She joins AUB from UNESCO (Paris) where she was the Deputy Director for Management of the World Heritage Centre. Dr. Apaydin has worked, consulted and taught in English, French, Italian, Russian, and Arabic.

Dr. Nader El-Bizri will join the AUB Civilization Sequence Program as an Associate Professor. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the New School for Social Research in New York (1999), the MArch-II in Architecture from Harvard University (1994), and the BArch in Architecture from the AUB (1989). His areas of expertise are in history of philosophy and science, phenomenology, and architectural humanities. Prior to his AUB appointment he was a Principal Lecturer (Reader) at the University of Lincoln, and a Chercheur Associé at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris. He also lectured at the University of Cambridge (1999-2010), and held a Visiting Professorship at the University of Lincoln (2007-10) and a senior Research Associate post at The Institute of Ismaili Studies, London (2002-10). Previously, he lectured at the University of Nottingham (2000-2) and Harvard University (1994-5). He is also the General Editor of the Epistles of the Brethren of Purity series (Oxford University Press), Co-Editor of Islamic Philosophy & Occidental Phenomenology in Dialogue series (Kluwer), and Editor (Islam division) of the Encyclopedia of Sciences and Religions (Springer). He serves on several editorial boards, including Arabic Sciences and Philosophy (Cambridge University Press journal). He maintains active memberships in international societies and acts as Elected Council Member of the Société Internationale d'Histoire des Sciences et des Philosophies Arabes et Islamiques (CNRS, Paris). He published and lectured widely, and contributed to BBC Radio/TV programs. He moreover served as consultant to the Science Museum in London, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in Geneva, and the Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York and Berlin. Besides his academic profile, he has twelve years of professional architectural experience in London, Cambridge, New York, and Beirut.


Dr. Sawaya holds a Ph.D. in Management Sciences from the Department of Management Sciences, University of Waterloo, Canada (2011). His research focuses on the development and application of optimization methods to solve practical decision problems arising in the industry with particular interests in health care operations, supply chain design, game theory, and telecommunication network planning. His research is well recognized through top tier journal publications and presentations in international conferences. Dr. Sawaya was the recipient of several prestigious awards including the NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship, the NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship, and the ADONET Marie-Curie Research Grant. Dr. Sawaya was invited for research visits to the University of Cologne and the University of Dortmund in Germany, and to the IBM Research Center in California. He has also served as a consultant for the public and private sectors.


Dr. Kanj received the B.Eng. with high distinction from the American University of Beirut in 1998, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2000 and 2004, respectively. She has been a research staff member at IBM Austin Research Labs since 2004. Previously, she held multiple internships with the IBM EDA Group in Fishkill. She worked on modeling SOI effects, noise characterization of CMOS circuits, library characterization of novel circuit technologies, and is currently involved in variability-aware design methodologies and smart analytics. Dr. Kanj was a recipient of three IBM Ph.D. Fellowships, is the author of more than 30 technical papers, 7 issued patents and several pending patents. She received an outstanding technical achievement and 6 Invention Plateau awards from IBM. She received the IEEE ISQED and IEEE ICCAD best paper awards, and is currently a senior member of IEEE.

Majdi Abou Najm received his BE (1998) and ME (2000) from AUB and his PhD from Purdue University. He joined the faculty at AUB’s Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering after holding appointments at Oregon State University, MIT, and Purdue. He is interested in the sustainable development of water and geo-environmental systems to meet the demands of growing populations and the challenges of climate and landuse changes. His approach is to understand and model the dominant physical, chemical, and biological processes that govern the complex and multi-scale interaction between those soil-water-vegetation-atmosphere systems. His objective is to develop models and decision support tools for sustainable water resources and energy solutions as well as policies.


Darine Salam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She has a PhD in Environmental Sciences from the University of Cincinnati (2011). Her academic background includes a BS in Biology (1998), and a Master’s degree in Animal Physiology (1999) from the Lebanese University. She also holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Technology (2006) from the American University of Beirut. Darine’s research interests are focused on the bioremediation of vegetable oil spills in aquatic media. She is also involved in the study of oil autoxidation and polymers formation, toxicity testing, soil and water pollution, water and wastewater treatment, algae culturing and identification, and environmental biotechnology including molecular biology techniques. Darine has a science teaching diploma from the “Center for Educational Research and Development” in Lebanon, with three years of science teaching experience at “Salma Sayegh School” in Lebanon. She also has a certificate in the “Preparing Future Faculty in Engineering” program at the University of Cincinnati, which prepared her for an academic career in Engineering. Darine is the recipient of different University awards including the Jacob D. and Lillian Rindsberg Memorial Fellowship, and the Summer Graduate Student Research Fellowship at the University of Cincinnati.


Nadine Yehya holds a BBA (2000) and MBA (2001) from AUB and has received her PhD from Purdue University (2010). She taught many classes such as Advertising, Persuasion, Public speaking, and Media Literacy at Purdue University and Lasell College. She is interested in social and health marketing especially health campaigns targeting underserved communities. She has presented her research in international conferences and earned Alan Monroe Research Award.

Elie G. Hantouche earned his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati in 2011. His research and teaching interests include the behavior of steel framed structures under seismic loads (Experimentation and numerical analysis) with a focus on: beam-to-column steel connections including partially/fully restrained connections, modeling of frames with partially restrained connections, rehabilitation of structures, and nonlinear static and dynamic finite element analysis. During his Ph.D. studies, He mentored students in an integrated teaching and research program funded by the National Science Foundation. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Structural Engineering Institute, and the Engineering Mechanics Institute. He is the author of peer-reviewed journal articles and conferences as well as reviewed a number of scientific publications.

Dr. Youssef Bakhach will be appointed as Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) effective February 1, 2012. He graduated with MD degree from University of Bordeaux II in 1986, where he also completed his residency training in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery in 1992, one year as Chief Resident and two years of fellowship in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Hand and Microsurgery in 1992-1993 and 1994-1996 respectively. Since then, he has been in private practice in Lebanon. Dr. Bakhach will be of an added value to the department and will bring with him an extensive experience in the area of hand and microsurgery. He will be involved in teaching medical students and Plastic Surgery Residents, in addition to his involvement in the clinical and research activities of the division of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Bakhach’s name appears in 34 publications, of which 26 as first/second author.

Dr. Sally Temraz was appointed as Instructor of Clinical Medicine (Hematology-Oncology effective January 1, 2012. She graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine from Beirut Arab University in 2005. After graduation, she did three years of residency training in Internal Medicine in Hammoud Hospital, affiliated with Beirut Arab University (2005-2008), and three years of fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at AUBMC (2008-2011). She will be involved in teaching medical students and Hematology-Oncology fellows, in addition to her clinical and research activities in the Division of Hematology-Oncology.

Dr. Gilbert Abou Dagher will be appointed as Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine effective February 1, 2012. He graduated with an MD degree from the American University of Beirut in 2005. After which, he completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at Henry Ford (2006-2009) and in Emergency Medicine (2009-2011). Dr Abou Dagher is board certified in Internal Medicine and board eligible in emergency medicine.
Dr. Abou Dagher’s name appears on 4 peer-reviewed publications and a book chapter. He will be involved in the clinical activities of the department, teaching medical students, and contributing to the establishment of the residency training program.

Dr. Farid Talih will be appointed as Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine effective February 1, 2012. He graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine from AUB in 2001. After graduation, he did one year of internship at AUBMC (2001-2002), four years of residency training in General Adult Psychiatry (2002-2006), and one year of fellowship in Sleep Medicine/Clinical Neurophysiology (2006-2007) at Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He has been serving as Director of Psychiatric Services and Co-Director of Sleep Disorders Center at Ashtabula County Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic Affiliate since 2007, and Director of Psychiatric Services at Ashtabula County Nursing Home since 2007. Dr. Talih is certified by the American Board in General Adult Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine. Dr. Talih’s name appears on 4 peer-reviewed publications, of which 3 as first author, and 1 as second author, in addition to one book chapter. He will be involved in teaching, clinical and research activities of the Department of Psychiatry, and will add a value towards establishing the residency program in the department.

Dr. Alami received his MD degree from AUB in 1998. He completed his residency training in General Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University/ MCV Hospitals (1993-2004), after which he was appointed attending staff at Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Health Care System (2004-2006). He was appointed Clinical Instructor in the Division of General Surgery at Stanford University in 2004. Dr. Alami is certified by the American Board of General Surgery.
Dr. Alami will be involved in teaching of residents in the area of bariatric surgery, as well as in the research and clinical activities of the department. His appointment will bring an added value to the department, especially in developing outreach programs.

Ms. Nour Alayan holds a BScN (2004) and a MScN (2008) from AUB. She completed her residency in Nursing Administration at the Institute of Global Nursing at Johns Hopkins (Baltimore, MD) in 2007. After her experience in direct patient care in Medical-Surgical Nursing, she moved to Healthcare Consulting and worked in clinical programming, operations planning, project management, JCIA and Canadian accreditation preparation, and healthcare related software solutions. Ms. Alayan has been involved in clinical teaching of Medical-Surgical Nursing since 2007. She is interested in the areas of healthcare ethics, healthcare informatics, quality of patient care, and patient safety.


Ms. Rana Abdel Malak received her BS in nursing degree in 1993 and her Master in Population health in 2002, both earned from AUB. Ms. Abdel Malak comes with a long standing experience in nursing practice; with a major focus on areas of nursing leadership, administration, and project management at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC). Rana possesses in depth knowledge and technical expertise in various accreditation systems (JCIA, LMOPH, ANCC, and Magnet) and spearheaded key nursing projects at AUBMC to successful completion. She held different roles increasing in complexity, most recently as the Interim Chief Nursing Officer.
Currently, Ms. Abdel Malak is a nurse consultant in areas related to nursing leadership development and best practices in nursing administration.
Professionally, Rana is certified in project management from the American Academy of Project Management (AAPM) and Board Certified by the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Nurse Executive Advanced level. Recently, ANCC appointed Ms. Abdel Malak as an appraiser. Her areas of interests are nursing administration, leadership development, and nursing informatics.

Dr. Maya Romani will be appointed as Instructor of Clinical Family Medicine effective March 1, 2012. She graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine from Damascus University in 2006. After graduation, she did four years of residency training in Family Medicine at FM/AUBMC (2006-2010), followed by one year as Chief Resident in Family Medicine (2010-2011).
Dr. Romani will be involved in teaching, clinical and research activities of the Department of Family Medicine.


Dr. Nuhad Abou Zeid has been appointed as Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology effective January 1, 2012. She graduated with M.D. degree with distinction from AUB (1995-2002). After which, she did one year as post-doctoral research fellow at AUB (2002-2003), completed one year of internship in Internal Medicine (2003-2004), and three years of residency training in Neurology, including one year as Chief Resident, at Duke University Medical Center (2004-2007), and two years fellowship in Multiple Sclerosis at Mayo Clinic, Rochester (2007-2009). Dr. Abou Zeid is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Since 2009, Dr. Abou Zeid has been appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at Wake Forest University Health Sciences at North Carolina.
Dr. Abou Zeid’s name appears on 5 peer-reviewed publications, of which 3 as first author, and 2 as second author, in addition to 3 book chapters.
Dr. Abou Zeid will be involved in teaching of medical students and residents in conjunction with the Abu Haidar Neuroscience Institute and will help in launching the Multiple Sclerosis program at AUBMC. She will also be involved in the clinical activities of the Neurology in general and Multiple Sclerosis services in particular.

Dr. Rami Badreddine has been appointed as Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine effective January 1, 2012. He graduated with M.D. degree with distinction from AUB (1995-2002). After which, he did one year as post-doctoral research fellow at AUB (2002-2003), completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center (2003-2006) and three years fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic, Rochester (2006-2009). Dr. Badreddine is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with sub-board in Gastroenterology. Since July 2009, Dr. Badreddine has been appointed as Consultant Gastroenterology with Salem Gastroenterology Associates at North Carolina. Dr. Badreddine’s name appears on 9 peer-reviewed publications, of which 5 as first author, and 1 as second author, in addition to 1 book chapter. Dr. Badreddine will be involved in teaching medical students and residents and in launching a program in clinical research, and he will be especially involved in the GI fellowship program as well. He will also be involved in the clinical activities of the Gastroenterology services with emphasis on esophageal diseases and motility disorders.

Dr. Firas Kobaissy, Assistant Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics.Dr. Kobaissy received his Ph.D. in Molecular
Neuroscience from the University of Florida in 2006 with a post doc in psychiatry research. His research focused on brain injury due to
mechanical insult or due to drug abuse neurotoxicity. Dr. Kobaissy will be involved in the teaching and research and will contribute
significantly to the establishment of the Human Genetics and Genomincs
Center of excellence.


Dr. Souha Fares graduated from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA with a PhD in Statistics in May 2011. She taught for 5 semesters at Case Western and received the Dean's Graduate Excellence Teaching Award in 2011. She also served as a teaching assistant at Case for several courses, both Grad and undergrad. Before that, she had received a bachelor degree in Mathematics from the Lebanese university and a masters in Modeling and Simulation from the Lebanese university with collaboration of the universities of Rennes and Reims, France and L'ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland. The topic of her PhD dissertation covered the option pricing theory. She also worked as a data analyst on biomedical projects. Her research now focuses entirely on topics related to Public Health.
Dr. Imad E. Shehadi joined AUB as Instructor of Clinical Specialty Surgery on November 7th, 2011.
Dr. Shehadi received his MD degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 1994. He completed three years of General Surgery residency training at The New York Medical College in Valhalla NY followed by a fellowship in Trauma and Critical Care (1994-1998). Dr. Shehadi then completed a year of training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the North Eastern Ohio University College of Medicine, Akron, Ohio (1998-1999). He then joined the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at the Medical College of Wisconsin where he completed his fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and a fellowship in Microsurgery (2000-2003). In 2003 Dr. Imad Shehadi returned to Lebanon where he joined Dr. Sameer Shehadi, and Dr. Ramzi Shehadi at the Plastic Surgery Institute where he practiced for eight years prior to joining the AUBMC team. Dr. Imad Shehadi is certified and a Fellow of the European Board of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
Dr. Shehadi will be involved in teaching of residents in the area of plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as in the research and clinical activities of the department. His appointment will bring added value to the department in the areas of Aesthetic, Breast, Craniofacial, and Microsurgery

Daniel W. Smith will be a visiting professor at AUB in the Department of Philosophy during the Spring 2012 semester. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Purdue University. Smith is a specialist in European thought, notably the work of Gilles Deleuze, and he has published widely on topics in contemporary philosophy. A volume of his collected writings, entitled Essays on Deleuze, will be published in 2012 by Edinburgh University Press. He is the translator Gilles Deleuze’s Francis Bacon: The Logic of Sensation and Essays Critical and Clinical (with Michael A. Greco), as well as Pierre Klossowski’s Nietzsche and the Vicious Circle and Isabelle Stenger’s The Invention of Modern Science.

Dr. Ohannes Geukjian holds a BA and MA in Political Science from AUB. He pursued his postgraduate study in the UK and was awarded the Ph.D from the Peace Studies Department at Bradford University in 2005. In 2006-2007 , he was enrolled in the PSPA Department as part time faculty. Since then he has been teaching a number of courses in the Department. He has published a number of articles in academic journals, like Middle Eastern Studies and Nationalities Papers. His book on "Ethnicicity,
