Dr. Mohamad Itani

Dr. Itani graduated with MBCHB degree from Alexandria University in 1982. He then completed his internship and residency training in the Department of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine and Medical Center at AUB in 1986. He received his Arab Board certification in 1993 and became International Fellow of American Academy of Pediatrics in 2004. Dr. Itani served as Clinical Associate in the Department of Pediatrics at FM/AUBMC (1986-2008); Head of Pediatrics Division in Najjar Hospital, Beirut (1988-2008); Chairman of Pediatrics Department in Middle East General Hospital (1987-2003); Assistant Chairman of Pediatrics in Makassed General Hospital, Beirut (2003-2005); and Vice Chairman of Pediatrics in Rafik Hariri University Hospital, Beirut (2006-2008). Dr Itani is a general pediatrician with broad clinical experience particularly in Neonatology, Child Nutrition, Asthma, and Behavioral Pediatrics. His major research interests are Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. He is an active member of the executive committee of the Lebanese Autism Society (LAS) and the coordinator of the Lebanese Pediatric Society (LPS) website www.lpswebsite.org. He is also the editor of the electronic Lebanese Pediatric Society newsletter (Pediatrica Online), published biannually on the latter website. He conducted with LAS several Autism Community Awareness campaigns funded by several national and international groups including Oxfam-Quebec foundation, World Bank, Hariri Foundation, and Prince Walid Bin Talal Foundation. Dr. Itani will be appointed as Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at FM/AUBMC effective February 1, 2008, and will be involved in the teaching of medical students and residents, and will be seeing patients in the AUBMC Private Clinics and OPD as of then.

 Dr. Lama Charafeddine

Dr. Charafeddine graduated with an MD from St. Joseph University Medical School of Beirut in 1987; she completed her pediatric residency at René Descartes University in Paris, and at the University of Rochester Medical School in Rochester, NY, where she also did her fellowship in Neonatal Perinatal Medicine in 1997. She has the American board certifications in Pediatrics and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.

Dr. Charafeddine held several positions in France and USA. After finishing her fellowship she worked as a general pediatrician at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital where she became later on the Chief of Medical Staff. In 1999, she joined Indiana University in the Division of Neonatology as Assistant Professor in Clinical Pediatrics, then was promoted to Associate Professor in 2004. She returned to Lebanon in 2005 and held the positions of NICU medical Director and Hospitalist Program Director of Clemenceau Medical Center, affiliated with Johns Hopkins International.

Dr. Charafeddine is a certified regional trainer in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program. Her research interests are: Perinatal and neonatal health, Bronchopulmonary dysplasia, oxygen toxicity and Neurodevelopmental outcome of premature infants.

Dr. Charafeddine will be appointed as Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics (Neonatology) and will be covering the neonatal intensive care unit in addition to seeing patients in her private clinic effective March 1, 2008.

Dr. Charlotte Karam

Charlotte M. Karam will be joining the Olayan School of Business as an Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior. She received her BA in Psychology from the American University of Beirut in 1998, and her Ph.D. in Applied Social Psychology - Organizational Psychology from the University of Windsor in 2008. Her research interests are in area of cross-cultural organizational behavior with a particular focus on examining the emic application of the concepts of organizational citizenship behavior, organizational commitment, and workgroup cohesiveness within a cross-level and West Asian/Arab organizational behavior framework.

Dr. Hazem Hajj

Dr. Hazem Hajj graduated from the American University of Beirut in 1987 with distinction.   He received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1996, at which time he joined Intel Logic Technology Development.  He received several teaching awards at the university of Wisconsin-Madison.  He has led research and development for several new initiatives at Intel.  These include Intel’s APC systems, station controllers, Manufacturing Technician User Interface, Real-time EOL Yield Analysis, Advanced Device Analysis, and Engineering Analysis Framework.  Research interests include Process Control Systems, Design to Wafer, Yield analysis, Device analysis, and Data mining.  Research interests include Process Control Systems, Design to Wafer, Yield analysis, Device analysis, Image Processing, and Data mining.

Dr. Ramzi Haddad

Dr. Ramzi Haddad graduated with a dental degree (DDS) from the Lebanese University Dental School in 2000, and pursued a Graduate Diploma in Oral Biology in 2002. Then he completed his postgraduate residency in Orthodontics at AUBMC (2005), and also received a DES in Orthodontics form the Lebanese University (2005), and spent a year as Chief Resident at AUBMC in 2006. He is expected to receive his MS in Human Morphology in February 2008. Dr. Haddad has been a Clinical Associate in the Division of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at AUBMC since July 2006. His clinical and research interests include the craniofacial anatomy in different malocclusions.

Dr. Haddad will be appointed as a full time Instructor in the division of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthotopedics, and will be involved in the didactic and clinical teaching of residents, and will continue treating patients in the private and postgraduate practices.

Dr. Anthony Macari

Dr. Anthony Macari earned his dental degree (DDS) from Saint Joseph University in Beirut in 2001, and a Graduate Diploma in Oral Biology  from the Lebanese University (2002). In 2005, he completed a postgraduate residency in Orthodontics at AUBMC combined with a Diploma in Orthodontics from the Lebanese University, and spent a year as Chief Resident at AUBMC in 2006.  He is expected to receive his MS in Human Morphology in February 2008. Then he was appointed as a Clinical Associate in the Division of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at AUBMC in July 2006.

Dr. Macari is joining the division of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics as a full time Instructor. Dr. Macari’s main research focus is the early effect of nasal obstruction on facial morphology, and the optimal timing for removal of adenoids and tonsils. He will continue treating patients in the postgraduate and faculty private practices.

Dr. Mariette Awad

Dr. Mariette Awad will be joining the EECE Department as an Assistant professor. She graduated from the American University of Beirut in 1997 with a bachelor in Electrical Engineering and pursued her MS at University of New York (SUNY- Binghamton) in the image processing and machine recognition areas. In 2001, she joined IBM - System and Technology group in Vermont as a wireless product engineer. Over the years, her technical leadership and innovation spirit has earned her management recognition, several business awards and multiple patents. In 2007, she received her PhD from University of Vermont for her research on dynamic machine learning. Her research interests include: Machine Learning, Data Mining, Data Fusion, Ubiquitous Computing, Wireless and Analog Design, Semiconductor technology and Manufacturing, Image Recognition and Quality Control.

Dr. Pascal Saikaly

Dr. Pascal Saikaly received his BS (Biology, 1997) and MS (Environmental Technology, 2001) from the American University of Beirut. He received his PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 2005. After his PhD, he spent two years as a Postdoctoral Fellow at North Carolina State University. Research interests include: Bioremediation of Emerging Contaminants, Biological Wastewater Treatment, Public Health Microbiology, Environmental Sustainability, Microbial Ecology of Engineered and Natural Systems, Molecular Microbial Ecology, and Mathematical Modeling of Population Dynamics.
