FALL REGISTRATION BEGINS ON MONDAY OCTOBER 24

The University for Seniors functions on a membership basis: You become a member for the semester. We hope you will find something you would like to participate in! Please note: In order to participate in any of the University for Seniors activities this term, we will be charging an introductory membership fee of $100.

Six-week long study groups:

  1. Readings in Fawaz Traboulsi’s “A History of Modern Lebanon”  with Johnny Rubeiz– Six sessions, Thursdays from 6:00-7:30 pm, beginning 10 Nov. (Maximum enrollment:20)
  2. The Art of Oriental Carpets with Hadi Maktabi – Six sessions, Wednesdays from 5:45-7:15 pm, beginning 16 Nov. (Maximum enrollment: unlimited)
  3. Capture a Memory/ Writers’ Workshop with Kathryn Dorman and Bert Hirschhorn – Six sessions,  Fridays from 10:00 am-12:00 noon, beginning 11 Nov (Maximum enrollment: 8)
  4. Introduction to Digital Photography with Mary McKone – Six sessions,  Wednesdays from 4:00-5:30 pm, beginning 16 Nov (Maximum enrollment: 11). Digital camera needed.

Mini-courses:

  1.  Opera Appreciation with Lama Tayan – Three sessions, Thursdays from 4:00-6:00 pm; 10 Nov, 8 Dec, 15 Dec. (Maximum enrollment: unlimited)
  2. Understanding Biases in our Everyday Decision-Making with Riad Dimechkie- Three sessions, Mondays from 4:00-6:00 pm; 14, 21, and 28 Nov. (Maximum enrollment: 25)

New Series: "An Evening with the Prof" (open to members only; no registration necessary)

Tuesdays, 6:00-7:00 pm

  • Najat Saliba Associate Professor, Chemistry.  “Smoke we see and Smoke we do not see”
  • Omar Dewachi Assistant Professor, Epidemiology and Population Health. “The Cost of War study: an international effort to calculate the effect of violence on well-being.”
  • Rami Khouri Director, Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs. “The new Arab Revolt: its causes and consequences”
  •  Rima Nakkash Assistant Professor,  “Health Promotion and Community Health.  Lebanon’s Landmark Tobacco Control Legislation:  An Insider’s View” 

New Intergenerational Activity:  

Round Table discussion with AUB students on "New Social Media" Friday December 2, from 4:00-6:00 pm (open to members only; no registration necessary)

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE

  • Registration begins at 9am on monday, 24 October and will be open until 5pm on Friday 28 October.  All courses are filled on a first to register, first to enroll basis beginning at 9 AM on 24 October. Please do not send your registration form before that time.  You may either send your registration form to Amani (ufs@aub.edu.lb) as an email attachment beginning at 9am on 24th October, or register in person on the day at the University for Seniors Office, Room 411, Regional External Programs (REP) Building, near the AUB Medical Gate. 
  • Payment is to be made by bringing $100 cash or cheque to the UfS Office. You can bring it with you if you register in person. If you are registering online, we suggest you pay by passing by the University for Seniors office during registration week.  You will be given a receipt.  The payment of $100 entitles you to participate in as many of the Fall term activities as you like.  Please note: your place in study groups and mini-courses will be guaranteed only after we receive your payment. 
  • AUB ID cards will be issued to members. Please bring two passport photos with you at the time of payment.
