AUB STUDENT SPENDING SURVEY 2007
During the academic year 06-07 President John Waterbury launched AUB’s “Neighborhood Initiative.” The Initiative was planned to begin slowly and carefully, with its first years devoted to understanding the university in its city: its economic impact, its intellectual and cultural relations, and other general questions about the effect of AUB on its surroundings.
AUB’s nearly 7000 students exert a strong influence on the university’s neighborhood. Student spending is obviously crucial to the survival of many local businesses. Some students live off-campus in rented accommodation, and this also contributes to the local economy. And when students drive their cars to AUB and park in neighborhood streets, this adds to the congestion of this part of Beirut.
Here we report on a survey conducted during the spring semester 2007 under the auspices of the Office of Student Affairs and the President’s Neighborhood Initiative. The findings will interest current and prospective students and their parents, local entrepreneurs looking for business opportunities that cater to the student market, and the AUB community more generally.
Those interested in the detailed reporting of survey data can find it on the website of the AUB Office of Institutional Research and Assessment http://www.aub.edu.lb/oira/reports/student-spending/
