For the first time this year, the annual Independence Cross-Campus Race took off from the Charles Hostler Green Field and covered a round tour of the lower and upper campus. Organized by the University Sports Department, the event, held on November 21, included a 3,500 meter race for males and a 2,500 meter race for the AUB women's team. AUB's track and field coach Yehia Makki said results were better than previous records for the strong runners.

No other universities competed, "because it is a little too early to be ready for a more comprehensive competition at this time of the year," said Makki. Almost a month and a half into training, the AUB team of 20 students, 15 males and 5 females, are showing marked improvement in their performance, but "they are heading for better achievements by the end of the year," continued Makki. Team training includes three two-hour sessions every week, and involves "warm-up, stretching, learning techniques and movements of running, as well as practicing how to breathe while covering different distances," Makki explained. Each team member is also furnished with recommended dietary schedules and instruction on what to eat before practice sessions and competition.

"The results of this race are very promising," said Makki

"Generally AUB team results are among the best during university competitions; but regular races are important for each member to be updated on their level after a certain training period," said Makki. After the race, medals were awarded to the first three male runners and one of the two female runners who participated in the event. "The top runner covered the 3,500 meter distance in 12:27:57 minutes, and this beat his own previous records. Overall I am pleased; results of this race are very promising," concluded Makki.
