Information to configure Netscape, Internet Explorer and SocksCap

To browse the Internet, you no longer need to use SocksCap with Netscape. Socks is only useful for those who need to telnet to hosts outside AUB.

bullet Downloading the Software
Netscape, IE and SocksCap can be downloaded from the local FTP server (accessible only within AUB)
Download the appropriate files to a temporary directory on  your hard disk and run them from there to install the software. In some cases, the downloaded file is a compressed ZIP archive and you will have to first uncompress it using WinZip. If you don't have WinZip you can download it from that same URL.

bullet Configuring your browser
Please read Configuring the Internet Connection (ON-CAMPUS) to set up your browser's proxy so that you are able to browse the net.

bullet Configuring SocksCap
SocksCap is a utility that allows a user to traverse a firewall. It authenticates the user (by asking for a UserID and password) and identifies the connections as belonging to this user.  SocksCap only runs on Windows. It doesn't run on Mac.

To configure it select the File menu then Setup and set the parameters as in Table 2 below.

Table 2
SOCKS Server: socks.aub.edu.lb
Port: 1080
SOCKS User ID: your UserID
Protocol: Socks5
Supported Authentication: Username/Password
Name Resolution: Resolve all names locally
Direct Connections: 192.168.

193.188.129.

Direct UDP Ports: leave empty
Direct Applications: leave empty

  • Do not forget the trailing "." (dot) at the end of the network address. If omitted, SocksCap will attempt to contact AUBnet hosts by going through the SOCKS server rather than connecting directly. The SOCKS server is configured to not allow local hosts to connect through it to other local hosts.

  • The next step is to tell SocksCap which applications you will be running. Click on the New button in the main SocksCap window. A window titled "New Application Profile" will appear. Type "telnet" in the "Profile Name" field, then click on the "Browse" button to find the telnet.exe file. It is normally located in C:\windows\telnet.exe. Leave the "Working Directory" field empty. Repeat this procedure for each application that you want to run through SocksCap.

  • Select View->Large Icons in the main window so that the application icons will appear more clearly. Exit from SocksCap. Finally, create a shortcut for SocksCap on the desktop.

bullet Browsing
Start Netscape or IE. Enter the URL (page address) you want to browse. If the URL is outside AUB, it will prompt you to enter a UserID and password. The system will check for the validity of your UserID/password combination. If valid, the page will be retrieved. Otherwise, you will have to check if you exceeded your Internet Quota or try retyping your password (it might be typed wrong).
