Measles

Infected individuals can spread Measles virus for 3 to 5 days before the appearance of a rash (1 to 2 days before the onset of symptoms). Individuals who are in continuous contact with a case as in household, would have been exposed before the appearance of clinical manifestation.

Vaccination to Prevent Measles

Live virus vaccine as long as 3 days after exposure may be effective in preventing measles.

  • Infant patient < 12 months old, who have been exposed within 6 days should receive live Measles virus vaccine.
  • Older children who have been exposed more than 3 days and less than 7 days previously, should receive Immune Globulin and then receive live Measles virus vaccine 3 months later.
