Hazardous Materials Management Plan Terms of References The purpose of this Management Plan through the Hazardous Material Sub-Committee is to establish a program to safely manage all Hazardous Materials and Wastes (HMW) at AUBMC. This is done by establishing policies and procedures that describe processes for the following:
- Proper selection, handling, storing, and disposing of HMW.
- Identifying, evaluating, and inventory of HMW used and generated.
- Managing, chemical waste, chemotherapy waste, radioactive waste, infectious wastes, and sharps.
- Monitoring and disposing of hazardous gases and vapors.
- Providing adequate and appropriate space and equipment for safe handling and storage of HMW.
- Establishing a system for reporting all HMW spills, evaluating employees exposure and other incidents.
- Establishing a training and education program for personnel who manage or work with HMW that comprises the following:
- Precautions for selecting, handling, storing, using, disposing of HMW
- Emergency procedures for HMW spills or exposures.
- Health hazards for mishandling HMW.
- Reporting procedures for HMW spills and incidents.
- Establish emergency procedures that describe special precautions, protective equipment, and special procedures during HMW spills or exposure.
- Establishing an on going assessment and monitoring program to evaluate the performance of the plan. This is done by assessing:
- Staff knowledge and skills.
- Emergency and incident reporting.
- Inspections, preventive maintenance and testing of equipment.
The plan should be evaluated at least on an annual basis to check its performance and effectiveness in satisfying the objectives set by the Environment of Care Safety Committee.
