  Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut is a teaching-centered research university based on the American liberal arts model of higher education. AUB has over 8,000 students and 800 faculty members. The University encourages freedom of thought and expression and seeks to graduate men and women committed to creative and critical thinking, lifelong learning, personal integrity, civic responsibility, and leadership.

  AUB is accredited in the US by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and includes six faculties: Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Engineering and Architecture, Agricultural and Food Sciences, Health Sciences, and Business. AUB offers more than 130 programs leading to bachelor's, master's, MD, and PhD degrees. The main language of instruction is English.

The Board of Trustees

Page Content
The Board of Trustees governs the university by establishing policy and exercising fiduciary responsibility for the long-term well-being of the institution. The board and its Executive Committee act on the recommendations from board committees, university offices, and the University Senate.
Board Framework
The Board
- Up to 45 active positions (renewable three-year terms up to 75 years of age)
- Serve three-year initial term; three-year renewable terms may follow
Alumni-Elected Trustees
- Three alumni are recommended for board membership through an election process by the Worldwide Alumni Association of AUB (WAAAUB)
- In each election cycle, there will be one position out of three for an alumnus or alumna who graduated within the past 10 years
- Alumni-elected trustees will serve for one three-year term only
Trustees Emeriti
- May attend board meetings; do not vote
