  Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut is a teaching-centered research university based on the American liberal arts model of higher education. AUB has over 8,000 students and 800 faculty members. The University encourages freedom of thought and expression and seeks to graduate men and women committed to creative and critical thinking, lifelong learning, personal integrity, civic responsibility, and leadership.

  AUB is accredited in the US by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and includes six faculties: Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Engineering and Architecture, Agricultural and Food Sciences, Health Sciences, and Business. AUB offers more than 130 programs leading to bachelor's, master's, MD, and PhD degrees. The main language of instruction is English.

Ayman Asfari

A trustee since 2007, Asfari is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Venterra plc., newly created in 2021. Venterra is a global services champion supporting the offshore wind industry’s rapid expansion and leading role in the energy transition. Prior to Venterra, Asfari established Petrofac International in 1991 and developed it into a leading FTSE 100 company. He served as Petrofac Group Chief Executive Officer until December 2020. Asfari is co-Founder and Chairman of the Asfari Foundation, and Founder and Chairman of Madaniya – an umbrella for more than 200 Syrian Civil Society organizations. He serves on the Panel of Senior Advisors for Chatham House and as a Trustee of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Asfari is a graduate of Villanova University (BS Engineering ‘78) and the University of Pennsylvania (MSc Civil and Urban Engineering ‘80).
