  Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut is a teaching-centered research university based on the American liberal arts model of higher education. AUB has over 8,000 students and 800 faculty members. The University encourages freedom of thought and expression and seeks to graduate men and women committed to creative and critical thinking, lifelong learning, personal integrity, civic responsibility, and leadership.

AUB offers more than 130 programs leading to bachelor's, master's, MD, and PhD degrees. The main language of instruction is English.

Abdulsalam Haykal

A trustee since 2011, an alumni-elected trustee from 2008-10, and an AUB graduate (BA ‘00), Abdulsalam Haykal is the founder and executive chairman of Majarra, the region’s leading platform of premium digital knowledge and information in Arabic. He is a board member of the enterprise software firm Transtek Systems and chairman of Lableb, a company focused on Arabic-natural language processing (NLP) and search technology. Based in the United Arab Emirates since 2012, he continues a business legacy that started in Syria in 1939.

Haykal serves on the UAE’s Arabic Language Council and the Advisory Board of the New York Abu Dhabi Center on AI and Humanities. The World Economic Forum recognized Haykal as a Young Global Leader, and he received the Arab Thought Foundation’s Innovation Award and the medal of the AUB Alumni Association (AAA) - Lebanon. He has an MA from SOAS, University of London
