Jana Al Youssif, a USAID-Refugee Scholarship Support (RSS) program scholar at the American University in Beirut (AUB), recently volunteered with the National Institution for Social Care and Vocational Training (NISCVT) to raise awareness for drug addiction and substance abuse in Ain El Hilweh Camp.
The NISCVT operates several social and cultural centers inside different camps, implementing essential programs that address the needs of underserved groups within these communities, specifically children, youth, and women.
As part of the campaign, Jana delivered informative sessions to mothers in order to educate and enhance their understanding of substance use disorder, and the dangers that addiction creates. Throughout the sessions, the audience explored the warning signs and symptoms of drug use, and learned important preventive and mitigation measures.
According to Jana, who is minoring in public health, this was an extremely rewarding experience, as she was able to disseminate valuable information, engaged with her community on a sensitive topic, and helped safeguard members of that community against the dangers of drug addiction.
