The University Libraries and other members of Modern Heritage Observatory (MoHO) have issued a statement calling for the protection of cultural heritage in South Lebanon.
The cultural heritage of South Lebanon is under severe threat due to ongoing attacks, destroying historic villages, architecture, and traditions. This heritage is recognized internationally, with some sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, but mere recognition does not ensure protection. Coordinated efforts at local, national, and international levels are necessary for safeguarding these cultural expressions and ensuring community involvement.
The Modern Heritage Observatory urges immediate actions to protect heritage sites, mobilize support from organizations, monitor damage, conduct surveys, implement emergency measures, fulfill legal responsibilities, engage local communities in heritage efforts, create a long-term recovery plan, and promote the region's cultural identity.
أصدرت مكتبات الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت، إلى جانب أعضاء مرصد التراث الحديث (MoHO)، بيانًا يدعو إلى اتخاذ إجراءات عاجلة ومنسقة لحماية التراث الثقافي في جنوب لبنان، الذي يواجه تهديدات متزايدة نتيجة الحرب المستمرة. ويؤكد البيان أن حماية القرى التاريخية، والمباني التراثية، والمواقع الثقافية، والأرشيفات، والمكتبات، والتقاليد الشفوية تتطلب تعاونًا محليًا ودوليًا، مع إشراك المجتمعات المحلية في جهود التوثيق والحفظ والتعافي. كما يدعو البيان إلى رصد الأضرار، وتنفيذ تدابير طارئة لحماية المواقع المهددة، ووضع إطار طويل الأمد لصون التراث وتعزيز الهوية الثقافية لمنطقة جبل عامل.
