Advocacy for Social Justice in Cataloging: Library of Congress Subject Terms

Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services at AUB Libraries, Ms. Basma Chebani, participated in the "Social Justice in Cataloging: A Roundtable Discussion" that was held on September 21, 2022, co-organized by MELA (Middle Eastern Librarians Association) and attended by other panelists from Bard College, University of North Carolina, and Harvard University.

The roundtable discussed social justice principles in traditional cataloging vocabularies, practices and related processes, in addition to the cataloging projects undertaken by the participants in the libraries.

Chebani's presentation entitled: “Indigenous resistance for Arabic and Islamic Terms in LC Subject headings", elaborated on the problems facing the Arab and Middle Eastern catalogers when describing the subjects of library catalog using the controlled vocabularies authority list (Library of Congress Subject headings). She also addressed the misunderstanding, bias and socio-political injustice of the terms related to Islam, Palestine, Arabic language and Arabic literature.
