On the World Arabic Language Day on December 18, the AUB Libraries would like to share information about the University Libraries accomplishment of translating the Library of Congress Subject Headings list to Arabic language.
The translation was the result of the collective effort of many consecutive cataloging librarians, namely Mr. Ahmad Taleb, Mrs. Asma Fathallah, Mrs. Aida Naaman, Ms. Zainab Bou Melhem, Ms. Ghada Nuwayhid. Mrs. Wissam Bukhary and Ms. Basma Chebani are continuing the work today and adding new terms as needed. The Arabic subject terms in line with the English terms are used for the classification, indexing and discovery of the library print and digital collections.
On this day, we also draw the attention to another pioneering role in the library to advance the Arabic Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology which allows the conversion of the scanned images of Arabic text to digital files. The efforts are led by Mr. Elie Kahale and his team in the Digital Initiatives and Scholarship Department.
