Book Discussion on the Origins of Language Inscriptions in the Mashriqian.

AUB University Libraries and the Lebanese Library Association cordially invite you to a book discussion on the origins of language inscriptions in the Mashriqian.

Prof. Albert Naccache, the author of the book A Stroll through the Garden of our Linguistic Heritage” published in Arabic مشوار في حديقة تراثنا اللغويّ” ” will present and discuss his book with the audience.

Author: Albert Naccache is a holder of an MSc in Neurophysiology from AUB in 1972 and a Ph.D. in the “Long-time Span History of the Mashriq” from UC Berkeley in 1985

Book:   نقاش، البر فريد هنري. مشوار في حديقة تراثنا اللغويّ   بيروت: منشورات صنوبر بيروت ، 2015

As per the author’s description, the manuscript of the book was written in 1994, thanks in large part to the resources of Jafet Library, which the author nearly inhabited in these pre-internet times. The book, in the first place, is a stroll through Mashriqian (a term which according to the author should be used instead of the tendentious “Semitic”) epigraphy, from early Arabic inscriptions of the 7th Century AD, through Nabatean, Tadmorean, Hatraean, Cananean, South Arabian, Ugaritic, Old Babylonian, and finally Old Akkadian inscriptions of the 23rd Century BC. It is also a presentation of a rigorous method of transliterating, transcribing, and translating all Mashriqian epigraphy in Arabic script and language. And last, but not least, it is an attempt at asking some fundamental questions about the relationship between these various linguistic instances, questions that should help the modern people of the Arab Mashriq relate to their cultural and linguistic heritage.

Presentation is in English with examples in Arabic
