American University of Beirut (AUB) hosts “Academic Integrity Seminar for Turnitin Users 2015″

​​​​More than 60 education professionals, librarians, and faculty members gathered in AUB’s West Hall on Monday, February 23rd to attend the Academic Integrity 2015 Seminar and discuss best practice in terms of information integrity and the related tools to detect and monitor plagiarism.

The event was co-organized by the University Libraries at AUB, the Center for Teaching and Learning at AUB, Turnitin and Techknowledge. The event is a yearly event and was held in Beirut for the first time.

The seminar featured guest speakers from educational institutions in the region and speakers from AUB who talked about their experience with Turnitin and with plagiarism. Representatives from Turnitin and Techknowledge showcased and discussed recent product updates and demonstrated some of the product features.

Substantial time was spent having discussions between educators, librarians, and Turnitin representatives, sharing their experiences, opinions, and recommendations.

The event kicked-off with a welcoming word by Techknowledge’s Levant and North Africa Area Manager, Somow Al-Saleh, followed by a presentation by AUB’s Academic Services Department represented by Hossein Hamam and Wissam Nahas, who spoke about the AUB experience with Turnitin from a technical point of view.

James Thorley, Director of International Sales at Turitin later spoke about Turnitin’s 2015 roadmap, followed by Rany Al-Baghdadi, President and Founder of Techknowledge, who spoke about the collaboration between Turnitin and Al-Manhal to enhance anti-plagiarism references in Arabic.

​​​Amy Zenger, Associate Professor of English at AUB and the Manager of the Writing Center, spoke of the pros and cons of Turnitin from the faculty members’ perspective. Ian McNaught, Head of e-Learning and Information Systems at al Majan College in Oman spoke about the university’s experience in implementing online assignment management.

The Seminar was closed after a presentation by Nidal Mawas, Digital Media Director and Instructor at AUB, who spoke about the impact social media has on information integrity, and on the threats it exposes. He also spoke about how AUB uses and tracks social media as a tool for monitoring plagiarism.

The seminar was an informative one where, at the end of the day, attendees were able to take the information and ideas to enhance further discussions about plagiarism and academic integrity at their respective institutions.
