Highlight: Online Video Collections at the University Libraries

On September 22 and during the University Libraries Open Day Annual event the libraries’ introduced its growing online video collection during a presentation in Jafet Library’s Antoun Ghattas Karam e-classroom.

Since 2014, the University Libraries has been acquiring online video databases through subscription so as to meet the increasing demand for multimedia resources for teaching, research and publishing purposes. Tens of thousands of videos across many disciplines are now available for AUB students and faculty members.

Videos are available using video streaming technology such that video streams are viewed from the internet browser and don’t require a player software. They are viewed in real-time and do not need to be downloaded as an entire file.

The core of the UL streaming video resources consists of four main collections:

  • Academic Video Online: Premium a multidisciplinary collection of videos that touches on the curriculum needs of virtually every department at AUB

  • Sage Knowledge a series of online collections developed in partnership with leading academics, societies and practitioners, to deliver cutting-edge pedagogical collections mapped to disciplinary curricular needs within the social sciences

  • Business Education in Video features executive interviews, corporate training videos, case studies, “How To” features and documentary films that focus on all aspects of the global business environment

  • Business Education Complete Online (BECO) which includes textbooks, book chapters, cases, corporate training videos, sample business documents, executive-oriented research reports and more. One of its featured video collections, entitled “Filmmakers Library Online” provides award-winning documentaries with relevance across the curriculum—race and gender studies, human rights, globalization and global studies, multiculturalism, international relations, criminal justice, the environment, bioethics, health, political science and current events, psychology, arts, literature, and more.

The video collection acquired is comprehensive and large, providing access to more than 60.000 videos.  Content is instructional and multi-disciplinary with two Business databases. It includes videos on art and design, communication, education, environmental sciences, film, foreign language materials, health, history, and psychology, and other subjects in all fields of knowledge. The collection includes all kinds of video material with curricular relevance: documentaries, interviews, performances, news programs, newsreels, and field recordings.

The collections can be found on the University Libraries’ list of Databases, under the Type “Multimedia”. The entire video collection is searchable using the SearchALL box on the UL webpage and is accessible from any computer or mobile device with an internet connection whether on-campus or off-campus. Videos are streamed using HD-quality players and recommended browsers to view videos on are Firefox and Google Chrome.

All online video collections provide learning and searching tools including searching, scrolling full-text transcripts, creating video clips, citing a permanent URL, sharing and embedding clips in third-party sites and learning management systems such as Moodle.

We invite you to browse these collections and we hope that they are useful and valuable for your research and for your teaching and learning objectives.
