Certificate and Class Chart

The following chart provides information about the types of certificates and the classes to which such applicants may be admitted. In all cases the SAT I (mathematical reasoning, verbal reasoning) must be taken by the deadline, and the Readiness for University Studies in English must be met.

The abbreviations used in the chart are as follows:

​High School Diploma or Secondary School Leaving Certificate, based on at least twelve years of schooling starting with Elementary I Class

Students with high grades on certain advanced placement (AP) examinations of the College Board may apply for freshman course credit in those subjects (see page 33)
​Freshman or Nursing I
​Government Secondary Certificates (literary or scientific), including the German Abitur and the Diplome d’Etudes Collegiales (DEC) based on two years of the CEGEP Program​Freshman or Nursing I

Students who successfully complete the freshman class are promoted to the sophomore class in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, or may seek admission to the equivalent classes in other faculties. These equivalent classes are the first year in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, the first year in the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business, the first year in the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, the first year in the Faculty of Health Sciences, and the second year in the Rafic Hariri School of Nursing. Students admitted to the freshman class are urged to consult with their advisors to familiarize themselves with the requirements for admission to the majors offered by the various faculties of the university.

Government secondary certificates (literary or scientific), including the German Abitur and the Diplome D’Etudes Collegiales (DEC) based on two years of the CEGEP program, the French Bacc. GCE and IB

  1. Government secondary school certificates (including French and Lebanese Bacc. General Sciences and Life Sciences) qualify the holder for admission to all majors in the sophomore class in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and to equivalent classes in the other faculties.
  2. Government secondary school certificates (including French and Lebanese Bacc. Literature & Humanities) may be required to take additional courses if applying to majors where some science or math is needed (9 credits of freshman level Natural Sciences and 6 credits of freshman level Mathematics at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences before joining their major if applying to the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture). Information on additional required courses may be obtained from the appropriate department/faculty section in this catalogue.

French baccalaureate holders with concentration in math in grade 11(specialité Math en Premiere) and wish to join Maroun Semaan Faculty of engineering and Architecture (MSFEA), or any science major in the faculty of Arts and sciences(FAS) must follow the below requirements:

  1. If the student does not take any Math in Terminale (grade 12), he should start with Math 101/Math203.
  2. If the student takes Math as option complementaire in Terminale (grade 12), he should start with MATH 102.
  3. If the student takes Math as speciality in Terminale, he should start with MATH 201.
  4. If the student takes Math as speciality + option experte in Terminale, he should also start with MATH 201. If the student did not take specialité Math in Premiere (grade 11)she/he will have the same requirements as holder of Government secondary school certificates (including French and Lebanese Bacc. in Literature & Humanities or Sociology-Economics) may be required to take additional courses if applying to majors where some science or math is needed (9 credits of freshman level Natural Sciences and 6 credits of freshman level Mathematics at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences before.
