On August 14, 2021, the AUB Medical Center (AUBMC) issued an appeal for fuel urgently needed to keep ventilators and other lifesaving medical devices operational. The appeal was prompted by the threat of a forced shutdown starting on August 16, which would have meant “that ventilators and other lifesaving medical devices will cease to operate.” Shortly thereafter, we began to receive additional fuel. AUBMC was able to back up its fuel supply. In the meantime, the work on longer term plans to ensure sustainability continue. We consider this situation a fully preventable humanitarian disaster, not a fundraising opportunity. Paying for fuel oil at exorbitant prices to keep the medical center open is not something we can afford to do indefinitely, but it is something that we are prepared to do for as long as we can.
Within hours of when the AUBMC appeal was made, we heard from thousands of alumni and friends asking what they could do to help. In response, we have established the AUBMC Emergency Fuel Fund. We welcome the support of anyone and everyone who wants to contribute to this effort. All donations will be used to pay for fuel needed at the medical center – when it is available.
