The massive explosion that ripped through Beirut on August 4th not only claimed more than 170 lives and caused 6,000 injuries, it also rendered the homes of 300,000 people unfit to live in and damaged countless others. AUB-CCECS responded immediately, organizing teams of volunteers to offer practical support and solidarity in the most affected neighborhoods. In the first few days on the ground, hundreds of AUB students, alumni, faculty, and staff addressed the most urgent needs, clearing debris and shattered glass from streets and in homes.
The recovery teams also made minor repairs such as sealing broken windows with plastic and removing dangerous objects at risk of falling on residents. CCECS teams continue to work on the ground. At the same time, AUB-CCECS is enlisting expert volunteers to conduct holistic assessments, identifying immediate interventions that would enable residents to safely live in their homes. Architects and engineers are mapping essential needs in damaged homes such as windows, secure entrances, electricity, and water supply. Qualified volunteers are also identifying potential needs of families in terms of financial and food security, as well as physical and mental health, with the aim of connecting them to appropriate support as needed. Structural engineers will also assess the safety of buildings. Following this in-depth mapping, resources will be directed appropriately to assist Beirut residents most impacted by the blast.
