The AUB campus sustained substantial damage as a result of the August 4th explosion. (You can view photos and video of some of the damage on campus and at the medical center here.) Every building – every building – was affected in some way: windows were shattered; doors were blown off their hinges; in some cases, the hinges themselves separated from the walls; some ceilings collapsed, ventilation ducts and electromechanical equipment was damaged; walls caved in; etc. Furniture (chairs, desks, tables, etc.), and classroom and laboratory equipment was also damaged. The Suliman S. Olayan School of Business, the Irani-Oxy Engineering Complex, the Charles Hostler Student Center, and the Diana Tamari Sabbagh Medical Building incurred the most damage. There was also significant damage to historic buildings on upper campus including Post Hall and West Hall.
We are working quickly to repair the damage – both to ensure the safety of our university community and also because we want to be able to welcome students and faculty back to campus for in-person learning as soon as the COVID-19 pandemic makes this possible. Preliminary estimates are that it will cost at least $5 million to repair the damage sustained on campus. Donations to the Campus Fund will support urgent repairs to buildings, classrooms, and laboratories throughout campus.
