The Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA) at AUB has launched an emergency building safety hotline for Beirut residents and businesses that are concerned about the safety of their buildings following the Beirut Port explosion. Teams of engineers led by MSFEA faculty have been mobilized to provide expert advice on dangers stemming from structural damage or from loose building elements that may fall down, and to provide advice on and oversee repairs to mitigate hazards. This mobilization is intended to provide concerned residents and business owners access to MSFEA's structural engineers, architects, and urban planners at no cost. Support is sought to cover the costs of basic materials such as lumber, cement, and light tools. Once initial emergency needs are met, MSFEA will adopt and help rebuild one or more schools or community centers in the affected areas and will provide neighborhoods assistance in preserving urban heritage through participatory planning tools. MSFEA is also putting its digital mapping assets at the disposal of non-profits and public agencies to facilitate coordination of service provision.
