Within minutes of the explosion at the Beirut port on August 4, our medical faculty, nurses, and staff were caring for hundreds of trauma cases, including a number of serious and critical cases. As President Khuri said in his message to the AUB community on August 5th, “We must do all we can, and some measure beyond that, to care for those injured and heal the terrible unseen wounds this has created.” That is what we will do.
Several members of our AUB community have reached out to us asking how they can support AUBMC’s efforts at this critical time when Lebanon is already facing so many challenges. In response, we established the AUBMC Disaster Response to the August 4 Beirut Explosion Fund.
Donations to the AUBMC Disaster Response to the August 4 Beirut Explosion Fund will be used to pay for the care of patients at our medical center who need financial assistance, for medical supplies, and for repairs at our medical center. There was substantial damage at AUBMC as a result of the August 4th explosion – in patient rooms, clinics, service and waiting areas, laboratories, etc.: windows were shattered; doors were blown off their hinges; in some cases, the hinges themselves separated from the walls; some ceilings collapsed, ventilation ducts and electromechanical equipment was damaged; walls caved in; etc. Furniture and laboratory equipment was also damaged. Preliminary estimates are that it will cost $2.5 million to repair the damage at the medical center.
There will continue to be needs at our medical center related to patient care for many months to come as we care for patients who were being treated at other hospitals in Beirut that were destroyed or badly damaged.
