Mercer University lends a helping hand to Beirut – and AUB

Wednesday, September 9, 2020

“We at Mercer have a big love of mission work in the US and around the world,” explains Dr. Ed Grimsley, “so we wanted to do what we could to help.”

Grimsley is a professor of medicine and senior associate dean at the Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Georgia. He and his colleague, Dr. Allen Tindol, have never been to Lebanon, but they know it well having worked with Lebanese colleagues over the years. Like so many people around the world, they were shocked when they heard about the explosion in the Beirut port on August 4. They wanted to do something to help. After receiving approval and strong encouragement from Mercer University School of Medicine Dean Jean Sumner, MD, Grimsley sent an email to Mercer University friends and colleagues inviting them to support the AUBMC Disaster Response Fund “in the spirit of helping fellow healthcare providers, in the spirit of Mercer’s Mission, and in the spirit of giving to a worthwhile humanitarian cause.”

“All of us at AUB and in Beirut have been profoundly touched by the outpouring of support from people like Dr. Grimsly and Dr. Tindol,” said VP for Advancement Imad B. Baalbaki. “We are very grateful.”
