The newly elected Kuwait Chapter committee kicked off their activities with a Suhoor event on May 18. More than 450 alumni and friends gathered at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel & Spa where the event took place. US Ambassador Lawrence Silverman, Lebanese Chargé d'Affaires Nisrine Boukaram, and Palestinian Ambassador Rami Tahboub were among the esteemed guests.
Kuwait Chapter President Lina Dalloul welcomed all attendees and spoke about the chapter's priorities including raising funds for student scholarships at AUB. She noted that proceeds from the evening would also be used to support this cause.
Another highlight of the evening was the presentation to Faisal Ali Al-Mutawa (BA '70), businessman, philanthropist, and former president of the chapter, of the AUB University Shield for his exemplary service to his alma mater and AUB alumni in Kuwait.
VP Imad Baalbaki, who traveled from Beirut with Associate Vice President Salma Oueida, representing AUB President Fadlo Khuri, made the presentation to Al-Mutawa. “It was an honor for Salma and me to join with so many alumni and good friends to celebrate this special occasion" said Baalbaki. In his remarks, he noted that Al-Mutawa's strong engagement and generous support for his alma mater began when he was a student in the late 1960s. It was then that he founded—and was the first president of—the Kuwait Student Society on campus. Over the years, Al-Mutawa has been a strong supporter of the Kuwait Chapter, the President's Club, the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business, and the Children's Cancer Center of Lebanon.
“I remember those days on campus so well," said Al-Mutawa during his eloquent and passionate speech. He spoke with great emotion about how much he owed AUB and how his years on campus had contributed to the success he has enjoyed during his life. “It's my duty and my pleasure to give back to AUB," he said.
