The listing of World University Rankings by Subject from Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) for 2019 was released on February 27, 2019, and shows great improvement by AUB, both in the broad area rankings and in the number of ranked subjects.

The university is ranked globally in the four broad domains of arts and humanities, engineering and technology, life sciences and medicine, and social sciences and management. AUB's ranking in all of these broad areas increased over last year's numbers, following a general trend of continuous improvement.

The number of subjects that AUB has ranked in also increased dramatically since the university's first appearance in these rankings. In 2016, AUB was ranked in only two subjects (medicine and computer science). This increased to four subjects in 2017, eight subjects in 2018, and now 11 subject areas this year.  In all ranked subject areas, AUB was #1 in Lebanon.

A win for all of AUB

“AUB should be congratulated for being ranked in four broad areas and 11 subjects, especially that these rankings have improved so much from 2018," said Dr. Karma El-Hassan, director of AUB's Office of Institutional Research and Assessment (OIRA). “Subject rankings are an invaluable source for students and parents when choosing which university to apply to, as their aim is to help prospective students identify the world's leading schools in their chosen fields."

The subject areas ranked by QS distribute across the spectrum of AUB faculties and disciplines, with several subjects represented by multiple faculties. For example, in the subject area of computer science and information systems, AUB has concentrations of researchers in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Suliman S. Olayan School of Business, and Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture.  The same is true of medicine, which covers a broad range of health sciences, including environmental health and health policy.

Arts and humanities: #256 in global ranking

The broad area of arts and humanities was AUB's strongest showing in the 2019 rankings, pulling in an overall score of 256 in the world, a big improvement over last year's score of 351. Within this domain, English language and literature was one of AUB's highest subject area scores, being ranked in the top 201-250 of world universities.

Social sciences and management: #364 in global ranking

Bringing in AUB's second-highest global ranking, the broad area of social sciences and management includes four ranked subjects: accounting and finance in the 201-250 range, business and management studies in the 251-300 range, and the newly ranked subject of education, which came in at the 251-300 range.

Engineering and technology: #373 in global ranking

The broad area of engineering and technology also made great strides from previous years, moving from the 451-500 range to #373 in the world.  AUB has three subjects that rank globally in this broad area and each of them improved from last year's rank. Electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science and information systems are all now in the top 301-350 range.

Life sciences and medicine: #385 in global ranking

Life sciences and medicine continues to be a strong category for AUB. Medicine is one of only two subjects to be ranked at AUB since 2016 and was consistently in the 251-300 range. This year, medicine moved up to the 201-250 range. This broad domain also includes two newly ranked subject areas: pharmacology in the 251-300 range and biological sciences in the 451-500 range.

Measuring quality

“What is most striking about QS Subject Ranking is its global scope and all-encompassing nature as they cover more than 1200 institutions and 48 subjects and rankings are compiled using four sources of data: QS's global surveys of academics and employers, research citations per paper, and h-index in the relevant subject," explained Dr. El-Hassan. “Moreover, when comparing indicators, AUB's citation index score is high, followed by academic and employer reputation, which highlights AUB's stress on both quality teaching and research."
