AUB and its medical center mourns the passing of Dr. Fayez Suidan, a leader, mentor, and devoted member of its community for over 55 years, who died on March 28. His academic and medical contributions to the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology made an impact locally and internationally, and were recognized through several awards.

After receiving his MD from AUB’s Faculty of Medicine in 1955, Dr. Suidan completed four years of residency training in surgery (1955-1959) at AUB. He then completed three years of residency training in obstetrics and gynecology (1959-1962) at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Suidan returned to AUB in 1962 as an assistant professor, and was promoted to associate clinical professor in 1982. He served as the acting chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1998-2000 and remained an active faculty member and physician until June 2018.

Dr. Anwar Nassar, professor and chairperson of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Dr. Ghazi Zaatari, interim dean of the Faculty of Medicine, wrote in an email to the AUBMC and Faculty of Medicine community, “Apart from his excellent record throughout his professional career, he was loved and respected by all medical students, residents, colleagues and paramedical staff for his high moral values, compassion and loving character. He was an inspiration to all of us as a teacher, mentor, talented surgeon and a role model. Dr. Suidan, you will always be remembered for your kindness, wit and refined taste.”

Dr. Suidan was the recipient of the Cedar Medal - Commander Rank, the Medal of Appreciation from the Lebanese Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Order of Merit from the American College of Surgeons.

In November 2018, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the administration at AUBMC chose Dr. Fayez Suidan to be honored during the HER Fund Gala dinner. Dr. Nassar and Dr. Zaatari handed Dr. Suidan a shield representing forceps, an obstetrical tool that he used to deliver thousands of babies, and on it was encrypted: “To a teacher, mentor and father of several generations. We truly appreciate how you touched all of us with your humility, skills, knowledge and love. Thank you, Dr. Fayez Suidan.”

Dr. Suidan was also recognized during the 25th Anniversary of the Middle East Fertility Society Annual Meeting during the same month.
