Passing of Dr. Theodore Christidis

Dear members of the AUB community,

I am writing with a heavy heart to convey to you the sad news of the passing away of Dr. Theodore Christidis, Associate Professor in the Department of Physics. The AUB community, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Physics, and his family, friends, and students have lost a committed, friendly, and generous teacher, mentor, and advisor who served AUB for the past 46 years. In his message to the AUB community, Dr. Jihad Touma, Chair of the Department of Physics said, “Prof. Christidis served physics, the craft, and its department, then natural sciences at large, during the critical war years and beyond. He did so under extreme circumstances and with unfailing dedication, drawing on his remarkable acumen as an experimentalist, administrative wisdom, and invariable insistence on scientific rationality which he carried through till his last days as he fought a difficult battle with a forbidding illness.”

Dr. Christidis obtained a BS (1967), MS (1970), and PhD (1974) from the AUB Department of Physics. This was followed by post-doctoral research at the Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford University, UK (1974-1976) and St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO, USA (1976-1977). In addition, he was a visiting scientist at the Clarendon Lab., Oxford University, UK, and the National Biomedical ESR Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin for several summers, and a Visiting Associate Professor in the Biophysics Department (National ESR Center), Medical College of Wisconsin (1991-1993).

Dr. Christidis joined AUB as an Assistant Professor in 1977 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1986. In 2004 Dr. Christidis was appointed Assistant to the Dean (FAS) for Laboratory Affairs, a position that he held until the academic year 2021-2022.

Dr. Christidis will be laid to rest today, Monday, November 28, 2022, at 2:10 pm.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and children during this difficult time. May God grant his family patience and strength.
