American Univesity of Beirut

Dean of the Rafic Hariri School of Nursing

Dear members of the American University of Beirut community,

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Samar Noureddine as dean of the Rafic Hariri School of Nursing (HSON) at the American University of Beirut, effective January 1, 2023. This follows an international search conducted by a committee representing trustees, faculty, staff, and alumni, co-chaired by Trustee William Zoghbi and Deputy Provost Lina Choueiri.

Dr. Noureddine graduated from the American University of Beirut (AUB) with a bachelor of science in nursing with distinction (BSN '83). She began her career in clinical practice, working at the AUB medical center and then in Saudi Arabia before returning to AUB to be both a registered nurse at the medical center and a clinical instructor at the school of nursing. After receiving her masters at the University of California, Los Angeles (MSN '94), where she also taught and interned, Samar returned to HSON as assistant professor. She then went on to pursue her PhD at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (PhD '01), and again returned to AUB, becoming involved in all major endeavors of HSON. She is currently tenured professor of nursing and associate dean for academic affairs and has been serving as chair of the Council of Associate Deans since January 2022.

At HSON, Dr. Noureddine brings a great combination of nursing knowledge, experience, and leadership, as well as a strong commitment to realizing the school's vision to be a leader in Lebanon and the region and achieve global recognition for excellence in education, research, and service. Beginning with her involvement in and coordination of the BSN program, Samar helped launch and coordinate the MSN program and then develop the school's PhD program, which graduated its first cohort this past spring. Since 2018, she has served as convener of the graduate division and has also been instrumental in the accreditation and reaccreditation of the school by CCNE. Dr. Noureddine is admired by her HSON colleagues, staff, and students, and praised as being an outstanding researcher and mentor.

An international fellow of the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Nursing, Dr. Noureddine is an expert on cardiovascular risk reduction, where she studies the knowledge and health-related behaviors of those with, or at high risk for, coronary artery disease. She has over 70 publications and is a frequent contributor at regional and international scientific meetings. On the national level, her research aims at supporting the development of national guidelines on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for healthcare workers treating cardiac arrest patients. In 2021, she received the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Scientific Society of Arab Nursing Faculties.

As a leading candidate for the deanship, Dr. Noureddine laid out a clear vision for strengthening research and educational opportunities, developing the school's path for growth and distinction, and fostering collaborations and international partnerships to further elevate HSON's longstanding work in nursing education and research.

With her extensive experience and thoughtful leadership, I am sure that Samar will help drive the Rafic Hariri School of Nursing into a new era of excellence, building on a tradition going back to 1905. Please join me in congratulating Dean Noureddine and wishing her the best of luck in this new role.

Best regards,

Fadlo R. Khuri, MD
