The Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences (AUASS) is based in Amman, Jordan and brings together scientists from 15 Arab countries at present.  In their meeting on May 2, 2018, AUB’s Professor Mounib El Eid was elected to represent Lebanon on the AUASS upper committee for a period of three years.

The aims of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences are to promote astronomical and space sciences research in Arab counties; emphasize the role and heritage of astronomy in the Arab and Islamic world; support activities (such as conferences, schools, and programs) to promote astronomical knowledge in Arab countries; encourage publications in Arabic for the sake of unification of scientific items in Arabic; and create common centers for astronomical work.

In contributing to this mission, Dr. El Eid—in collaboration with many colleagues and with the support of AUB—is planning the Third Arab School for Astronomy in November 2018. Around 40 students from the Arab countries will come together to learn and interact along with ten lecturers at the school, which will be hosted at AUB.
