John Ryan

​​​Biography

Dr John Ryan, an international soil scientist who is currently based in Ireland, has degrees from University College Dublin (B.A.Sc..., PhD, D.Sc.),  University of Arizona (MS), and is a Certified Professional Soil Scientist. He spent 4 years as a Post-doc Fulbright Fellow at the University of Arizona. Subsequently, he spent 11 years as Professor of Soil Science at the American University of Beirut (1975-86), Visiting Professor at the University of Arizona (1987-88), Adjunct Professor at the University of Nebraska (1988-92), and Senior Scientist at the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) in Aleppo, Syria (1992-2012). He has published extensively (journal articles, books, proceedings, manuals) in soil science, agronomy, fertilizer use, soil management, agricultural education, and has lectured in many countries around the world. He has held leadership roles in the American Society of Agronomy and the International Union of Soil Scientists. He received many prestigious awards, e.g., Fellow of ASA, SSSA, CSSA, all three international Society Awards, Honorary Member IUSS, Soil Science Distinguished Service Award, IFA Crop Nutrition Award, IPNI Science Award, and most recently the Liebig Award and ASA Presidential Award.
