Shafik Jeha

​​​Biography

Born in Bishmezeen, Koura, Lebanon, in 1912, Shafik Jeha received his BA (1933) and MA (1944) in history from the American University of Beirut. He then joined the International College as a teacher, where he served as chairman of its Social Sciences Department from 1944 to 1980. From 1954 to 1970, he was also a lecturer in AUB's Department of Education. He retired from teaching in 1980.

The co-author of forty textbooks, Jeha introduced the systematic teaching of national and civic education in Lebanon several years before the subject was included in the official Lebanese curriculum. In 1937 he founded Bishmezeen High School and in 1938 became one of the founders of the private school teachers syndicate in Lebanon. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Orthodox Annunciation School in Beirut during the 1960s and has been a member of the Board of Trustees of Dar al Nadwa in Beirut since 1985.
