AUB - West Hall Melhas Common Room
The AUB Botanic Garden committee (AUBotanic) is happy to announce the first Ancillary Botanic Garden Conference which will take place at AUB.
ABOUT ANCILLARY BOTANIC GARDENS
Ancillary Botanic Gardens (ABGs) are an informal versions of botanic gardens meant to offer opportunities for botanical education. The word ancillary means ‘secondary’. ABGs are secondary in that they are repurposed green spaces that belong to people or institutions such as universities, schools, resorts, and others. ABGs do not affect physically or functionally the site’s primary purpose. Instead, the repurposing of green spaces into an ABG offers the opportunity for a larger number of people and institutions to contribute to plant conservation and plant knowledge.
The American University of Beirut introduced the concept of Ancillary Botanic Gardens in 2014. AUB is now collaborating with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh to encourage the establishment of ABGs in Lebanon and the region.
This conference will introduce botanic gardens and ancillary botanic gardens. Participants will have a chance to learn how to repurpose green spaces into ABGs. They will have the opportunity to become members of the ABG network, which will support the establishment, and operations of ABGs through open exchange of knowledge and experience. This will be an interactive and informative conference, and a unique opportunity to facilitate connection between others who share the same interests and initiate the botanic garden movement across Lebanon.
