Background and Objectives
The UK─Lebanon Atiyah fellowships allow exchange and interaction amongst promising mathematicians in Lebanon and the UK. The fellowships operate in partnership between the London Mathematical Society (LMS) and AUB's Center for Advanced Mathematical Sciences (CAMS). The fellowship scheme provides for an established UK-based mathematician to visit Lebanon for a period of up to six months, or alternatively for a mathematician from Lebanon of any level above BSc, in particular promising advanced level Msc or PhD students, to visit the UK to further their study or research for a period of up to 12 months. One or more fellowships may be awarded in any one academic year as funds allow.
The UK-Lebanon Fellowships come at the service of mathematics in Lebanon and a fulfillment of Sir Michael Atiyah's longstanding commitment to this service. It allows advanced-level students to visit the UK to further their research and interact with mathematicians in host institutions. The fellowship program also allocates resources to direct activities around the expertise of the fellows and their colleagues and nurtures interactions with members of the Lebanese mathematical community.
Sir Michael Atiyah (1929-2019) was a towering figure who shaped the British and international mathematical landscape for over half a century. Born in England to a Lebanese father and Scottish mother, he retained strong links with Lebanon throughout his life. He was deeply implicated with AUB's Center for Advanced Mathematical Sciences since its inception. A frequent visitor, he served as chair of its International Advisory Committee and was an insightful mentor to its directors and associates.
